Are the blocks the same as the 301, would I be able to bore my existing block or better off getting the 301 and boring that. want to bore to 4". I would have to buy a 301 so using my existing block will save money as long as the end result can be the same.

Look around for an IH grain truck that has a 6 in it. Good factory performance parts there if built right. Truck IH 6 cyls have a high compression head over the tractors, have to use flat top pistons with it, but will build alot of compression. ChadS

Yes, the blocks are mostly the same, anything that can be done to a IH 6, can be done to all of them. Yep, a 301 to start with would be cheaper to bore, than any other. Been thinking of the 301 kit for a while for my 460, So many options, what to do????? ?? ChadS

When looking at th SN# tag on the 301-265.. is it clear which engine is which... or is there a casting number??? I don't usually pay much attention to the later red tractors.. but I found an engine.. heads and other parts off... off an old grain truck... Thanks

Casting numbers. is the best way to tell, the tag on the engine is usually found inside the truck in the cab down by the kick panel by the drivers door. Visually, they look different, in a few ways, the firing order is on top of the head on the truck heads, and on the block for the tractors, also, look at the compression chamber, and the valve angle. the truck heads, have a very very shallow chamber, and there is no angle in the valves, where the tractors, have a large chamber, and angled valves. Also the dead give away for a truck engine is the flat top pistons. the SN# on the combine engines usually have the model of the machine it was placed in, tractors have the cubic inch on the block, stamped at the front. not too sure on the trucks on the block for numbers,, like I said, they had ID plates inside the truck. Also the truck/tractors/combine blocks and heads had different casting numbers, not listed together. ChadS

Thanks.. is there a listing on the web of the different numbers??? The trucks were sold years ago.. I have no idea what is really there.. I didn't have to to dig though the parts.. I'm not even sure it was an IH... but I will look closer next time I get a chance to get to the parts again... JDGnut

On most of the 6-cylinder IH truck engines, the model and the serial number are usually on a machined spot on the passenger side (that's the RIGHT side, for you 100% tractor folks)of the block...top of the block, just below the head, in front, just behind the water pump...can't miss it.
