Length and Diameter of Exhaust Pipe

Are there any of you out there that now any tricks as to how long or round a exhaust pipe should be to help the engine breath the best it can? I know sometimes too short or too long of one isn"t any good. Any thoughts? Im putting one on a M Farmall if that makes any differents. Thank You!!

I haven't done this myself, but have heard of guys doing it. Use a grease pen and draw a line up the pipe, then with the engine up to temp, see where the grease pen stopped melting, and this should be your "ideal" length for the pipe to help draw the exhaust out, much like a chimney.

Give it a shot, it may work!

Crayon works fine. From the testing we done there was no noticable change from about 22" to 36", But we were using a big pipe for the cubic inch size, because the tractor had a big outlet. I would say from our tests, that the grease pencil way would work as good as any and would just about be max hp on the dyno also.

The proper length of pipe is going to be specific to each engine and set-up. There is no certain length that's going to make maximum power in every tractor.

We did some Dyno testing in the August issue of Old Power Pride Magazine. Using a 220 cubic inch engine with a 2-1/2" pipe diameter, we started seeing a slight loss when we dropped below 13" long. I would try to run at least 22" in length. It was a total of 2 hp increase over the stock muffler. If you will e-mail me your address, I will send you a free issue.
