After working on a JD A for pulling with a bore to .125 over, and milling down the head to increase compression we reassembled the tractor and ran it 20 minutes. It seemed to run fine. The next week when we went to start it both cylinders were full of antifreeze. We took it apart, had the head pressure tested and it is ok. I asume the head gasket is the problem. When I reassemble, should I torque the head more than standard due to the fact that it is higher compression? If so how much more? Any other suggestions to correct this? Thanks.

Remove the head and check the deck on the block. Need to have two good straight mating surfaces not too smooth. Do not torque but 10# over the manufactures rated torque spec on the head bolts. Use Copper Silicon on the head bolts into the block and also in place of the lead washers.Re-torque when engine is warm. Now which head gasket are you using? If you are using one from JD you might as well use cardboard, try to obtain a head gasket Felpro or NAPA much better and they hold raised compression better also. You could also coat the gasket with Copper Spray, we have had good luck with that.

NO..!!! Use the factory recommended torque settings, BUT re-torque after it has heated and cooled several times...re-torque with the engine at FULL HOT condition...not just "warmed-up"... This get's the head studs Hot, too - as they grow longer as they get hot and it takes longer for them to get hot... Some recommend sealer on the head gasket, and most get "some" seepage after a rebuild ( for a short while). Be sure all the nuts and stud threads are chased and lubed before you put them on.. If you have real high compression, you might want to re-re-torque after a few good HOT runs..just to see if the torque is holding at specs... I like to use "Bars Leaks" in mine..I feel it lubes the water pump..and prevents future leaks... Some like it..some don't..
