It was a great show, the stands were full and the grounds were packed with people to see this show, it was truly standing room only if you weren't there early, I have watched this for alot of years and how it has grown to such a fun event, I have heard of other heavy weight pulls, but this has to beat them all, I was suprised the farmall held together. I give it credit, but I had concerns with it being a component tractor and not a full casted unit like the deere's, my hat goes out to all that pulled, but Al and Bill proved that nothing pulls like a deere in this event. see ya next year.

First of all i'd like to say that for a 60 horsepower M weighing 34,000 it did one hell of a job. A deere 720 is is probably twice the tractor a M is. And the deere only beet the Farmall by 7 feet. And i know that deere was probably at least 6-7 thousand pounds lighter. I would also like to point out that i'm not trying to make excuses for the farmall but if horsepower were equal, the red would have pulled ahead. And to everyone who sais it couldnt be done( a Farmall M weighing 34,000 pounds and not breaking or plugging itself first time out at just 60 horsepower) it did it. Just wait till next year cause it's not a secrete anymore, the red WILL have bragging rights. Coingratulations to the winner.

If that "M" had a 660 motor in it as was alluded to above, it had far more than 60 horsepower. Stock 660 hp is 70-75 depending on fuel type. Do you know why Deeres dominate this sort of pulling? Two words - creeper gear.

I would think people would notice the two extra cylinders on the M if it had a 660 motor, M had a 4 cylinder. IH had a low or chopper gear for a M, it would be as slow as a JD creaper gear

I'm sure they would notice. I hadn't seen any pics when I posted that, but just saw the reference to a M/660 and wondered what it was about. Of course I should have known that it was in reference to the weak "M" multi-piece rear-end needing to be beefed up to take the weight.

Farmall M weighing 34,000 lbs??? How on earth do you get that much weight on a tractor that only weighed 5,000 lbs originally? I know I am missing something here. I would absolutely love to see pictures of such a beast. I don't think that all the tractor pullers that I know own 30,000 lbs of weights all put together.

Well belive it or not because i was an eye witness. With twenty wheel weights on each wheel and suitcase weights stacked everywhere it did indeed weigh 34'000 pounds. I have it all on video. And let me add that i'm guessing that the 720 wasn't stock because there was another 720 there weighing a good bit that stalled in earlier rounds.

To the unknow writer. Lets talk about the M/660 tractor. It takes someone to shoemaker a pair of tractors to make one try to beat the JD's. And for all the reader out there that 720G that pulled that night is stock from front to back along with most others. Please inform the readers about this homemade tractor people would like to know.

First off let me say that your right. That M wasn't exactly stock. But you can bet your rearend that the 720 wasn't either. That farmall was stock in that it had a 4 cylinder engine with stock bore size and stock stroke. It also had the stock rearend. Now why dont you tell me how a 720 gas can out pull a 720 propane when the propane tractors are rated as a higher horsepower tractor? The propane stalled out at around 24-25 thousand pounds of sled where as the 720 gas went on to pull the led at almost 27000 pounds until it stalled. Now go ahead and tell me it's stock like most of them are. What do you call stock?

It's not all sheer horsepower, it's how you put it to the ground. Not to mention that a 720 LP does NOT have more horsepower than a 720 gasoline. Nebraska Test #605 - JD 720 Gas - PTO/belt horsepower - 57.77 -- maximum drawbar horsepower - 53.41. Nebraska Test #593 - JD 720 LP - PTO/belt horsepower - 57.33 -- maximum drawbar horsepower - 52.38. Apparently what is "Unknown" around here are your facts. Did you ever think that maybe those two tractors (the two 720s) were in a little different state of tune? Maybe one has a little stronger engine? Have you ever seen two tractors of the same model pull exactly the same distance, regardless of fuel type? What were the rules regarding what could be done to the tractor? Did that "stock" M have the stock head, carb and pistons to go along with that stock bore and stroke? Did the Deere have a Power-Block, longer stroke or anything else that you KNOW of, instead of just guessing? And why did that "M" need so much more weight to get outpulled by 7 feet? Maybe HE had more horsepower and needed the weight to get hooked up? Why are those stock Deere axle housings strong enough to take the load and the Farmall units not? Please post back with the answers to all these questions. I've never been to a deadweight pull and am anxious to be educated.

Your right. I was wrong about the horsepower between the two deeres. But still both of these tractors were beutifully restored and i cant imagine that any money was spared when building these tractors. Besides as far as i know they only pull these tractors at king of the hill. But I guess I'll quit arguing about this because king of the hill rules are there are no rules other than be very careful. I guess i just got stirred up because everyone was running their mouth about the farmall. Besides, if another john deere tractor showed up that was never there before and ended up in the top two, would anyone complain. To conclude this ever lasting arguement i was wrong about some of my information and there are no rules so build yourself a tractor and come get ya some!

I don't want a big argument either, but the fact that you mention that the tractors were well-restored throws up a flag. If they were meticulously restored, chances are that they weren't modified much internally, if at all. You can gain a little stroke and bore in a Deere without messing with other internals, but if you want to build a real ground-pounder, you have to start cutting, grinding, welding, etc. And most guys that are into genuine restoration aren't into that sort of thing, while a lot of hard-core pullers I've been around put more time into the motor than they do into the paint. I'm not saying that the 720 HAD to be stock just because it was pretty, of course. At any rate, it sounds like it was quite a show. And no, I don't think I'll be trying it anytime soon. I've seen some deadweight pulling pics, and standing a tractor nearly straight up isn't high on my "to-do" list, lol. I don't think my blood pressure would take it.

That's craziness, but to each their own. Honestly, that looks like a good way to break an otherwise nice old tractor in half and end up buried in a pile of suitcase weights. I don't think I'd be able to walk, much less pull after throwing all those on.

M/660? Was he running a six-banger in that M? 34,000 lbs. That sounds like someone that is a severe glutton for weight-throwing punishment.

It was unbelievable. It was a great night. Best of all he still had room on his weight brackets for more weight. The Farmall Made for a great show. Hope he will be back next year and give even a better run. Not bad for the first time. Good luck!

Til one of those tractors breaks in half and leaves the driver buried in a pile of suitcase weights. Most old tractors were overbuilt for the loads they were subjected to, but that's getting a little ridiculous, and I don't care if you're talking about a Deere, Farmall or what. Just another potential catastrophe waiting to push insurance premiums higher.
