First off, International didn't make ANY V8's until 1956 for the 1957 models...and THEN those were the LV-series engines, which were HUGE. They included the V-401, which made 206 hp @ 3600 rpm and 355 lb/ft of torque @ 1800-2000 rpm, and weighed 1089 lbs with accessories; the V-461, which made 226 hp @ 3600 rpm and 420 lb/ft of torque @ 1600 rpm, and weighed 1088 lbs dressed; and the V-549, which made 257 hp @ 3400 rpm and 505 lb/ft of torque @ 2000 rpm, and weighed 1108 lbs. Later incarnations of the LV-series engines included the V-478 and the V-605, but I don't have the specs on them. The 478 and the 549 also found their way into Dodge trucks in the 1970's, and the last year for them was 1979. The SV-series engines, which include the V-266, V-304, V-345, and V-392, didn't come along until about 1958, with the B-series trucks. So if your truck is, indeed, a '51-2-3 year model, the V8 in it has been transplanted from something else and is NOT the original engine. Not sure how to ID the LV-series engines, but the SV engines have the engine ID stamped into a flat machined surface on the front of the engine, just below the passenger-side cylinder head...top row is engine ID, second row is engine serial number. The V-549 is the gasoline equivalent of the DV-550 or 9-liter diesel, used in the 1468 tractors, if I'm not mistaken.
