I got a pretty healthy H (IH 350 internal componets) & I bolted a used 300 manifold and M carb on thought maybe the small stock carb was holding me back. I lost ten horse on the dyno. I was running 41 with the stock carb and manifold. I could not get the M carb to run rich enough. I took the main fuel jet all the way loose and she didn't even smoke. Should I try to dig up a 300 or 350 carb? or can I change the M carb's venturi or jets to make it work.

Since you are flowing a bit more air, you need more fuel. Match you jet size with the bottom 2 holes of the metering stem in the bowl of the carb, Most hardware stores have the numbered drill bits to do this. Basicly find the bit that matches your existing jet, then buy 4or5 sizes larger bit. drill out the bottom 2 holes in the metering stem so it allows more fuel to go through the stem. Try to keep the venturi under 1 inch on this, you dont want to lose too much vacuum from too big of carb. I would say that after you get the fuel right, you should be around 45-48hp if dialed in. Keep an eye on the plugs for a cocoa brown color while under a load,, this will let you know the engine has a good clean burn in the chamber. No, dont throw waya the 8043 head, they are a good cyl head for the H-350. Have you ran a compression test on this engine? ChadS

The engine is running mostly on the idle circuit. There isn't enough airflow to develop (normal) pressure drop across the venturi to lift and mix the fuel. Then there isn't enough airflow to volocity to keep the air'fuel mixture evenly mixed from carb to cylinders. Is there a intake to head mismatch where the head port is smaller than the intake's port. That turbulance will stagger any engine. If the ports do match, then more airflow from displacement,porting or rpms will be required to make that intake system work.

You need more head and manifold to get the needed airflow through the carb. How much porting have you done??

I haven't done any porting and I have the 8043D head milled .125 Should I change heads? How much porting is required to get the right flow?
