Hello everyone,
It is with great joy that I am able to type today. I took my Oliver 77 to a pull yesterday and after my pull I went to load it on the trailer. My truck and trailer were parked on an uphill grade. I thought about turning the truck around so I could load it going down hill but decided it would be okay to go ahead and load it. When I did, the front tires never touched the deck of the trailer after leaving the ramps. I was pulling a wheelie at the same angle of the ramps and was about to hit a WC allis that was already on the trailer. I didn't know what to do but to hit the clutch to roll backwards. I am not sure if I hit the brakes or something else happened, but the next thing I knew, I was laying under 5200 lbs of Oliver with my leg pinched between the fender and the ground. I heard lots of bones craking as the nose was about to hit the ground. I really thought that this could be the end for me. The pull back tractor had a loader and lifted the 77 up enough to free my leg so I could be pulled out. I was rushed to Franklin hospital in Rocky Mount, VA and then airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital. After several hours of EKGs, CT scans and x-rays, I was told that I had nothing more than abrasions, bruises and a few cracked ribs. I really thought that my foot had been cut off by the fender and was expecting lots of internal injuries. I know that the good lord was with me, because there is no logical reason that I was not killed by this accident. I just wanted to post this to warn people to please be careful in all aspects of this sport that we love. A few extra minutes to move the truck could have made a lot better ending to a great day of pulling.

Thanks,
Keith

Believe me, I know that this is all my fault but I do want to say that this was a stock tractor with no weight brackets. It does have wheel weights and cast centers. I am sure that most of the experienced folks would not have let this happen but it could, and did, happen to a Rookie. I just want to let the rookies know to examine this situation when it comes up in the future and maybe some of you veterans can keep an eye out on the rest of the new ones and maybe give some advice.

Thanks,
Keith

seen a man get killed this way when I was a kid! 9 years old, saw the whole thing, his dad standing there screaming for help, I am 28 now and I can remember it as plain as it was yesterday! not a real fond memory!..... .everyone just be safe and take the time to move the weights!

First things first, I am glad you are realitively OK considering.

I have a center weight bracket that I always have 1000 lbs on when I load and unload the tractor and very seldom have any on the back.

I don't know why other people don't have it weighted to the front so it doesn't pull the front end up. Just plain stupidity!!!!! Same with not having 3 ramps if you are pulling a narrow front.
Sorry for the harshness but just my opinion. Too many times of hearing someone getting hurt loading and for no reason.

Years ago, more than I care for, (31) saw a guy stand up a f20 , drove front first up steep ramp, got scared and stepped on clutch, tractor started to roll back and he panicked and grabed both hand bracks, not sure why it didnt go over as it was right up there, (no rear weights on thank god) think the flanel drive rears saved him, he was shaking so bad he was useless for years when it came to loading. Also saw a kid roll a Belarus stright up and down, only thing that saved this guy was weight rack was so high it stopped the tractor from going completly over. Word to the wise if you drive it on, UNLOAD the rear weights, it could save your life or that of an innocent bystander, otherwise Back that bad boy on. Ive' seen it all, young children or women holding babies standing next to ramps. Lets use some common sense out there.

Keith, an very eiry reminder of The Bulldog flipping over last year. Thankfully your injuries were also relatively minor, considering the alternative! One heck of a way to get to ride in a helicopter!! Best wishes for a fast recovery.

Thanks for your concern Mark. I am really sorry that I scared everyone so bad, including me. You can bet that I learned a valuable lesson from this and it will not happen to me again. I will see you at Ridgeway hopefully, but I am afraid that the wheelie popping oliver will not get to see a track for a while. I have lots of parts to buy and a helicopter ride to pay for.

Keith

Just A word for all of us pullers SAFETY Sat afternoon I was getting off of my JD 60 to add weights just like always , but wasn't looking for a old tire rut in the ground. After finding it with my left foot and tearing tendons in my ankle as well as a small fracture Igot to ride to a hospital as well. just a friendly reminder to every one TAKE A MINUTE TO LOOK AND THINK IT MAY SAVE YOUR LIFE OR AT LEASE ALOT OF PAIN not to mention the abilty to go back to work the next week/month/year .

thanks and God bless BERRY FUNDERBURK

Keith, glad to hear your going to be OK. We all learn from our mistakes when they don't cost us our lives. After hearing about that happening to a friend in SC a couple years ago, I am aware of how many weights I have on the back and how many I don't have on the front. I also watch the loading angle.

I don't know ya but I consider all pullers my family, and I don't like to hear about family getting hurt. That happened to my brother last year. He has a MH 44D and was loading it first on our 35ft. gooseneck and the front tires came off the ground at the top of the ramp. He was loaded down to pull the 5500# and had all 1200# on the back rack without thinking. Luckily it only came 2 ft. off the ground. From then on the weights are balanced before we load. Ironicly that was at the SC pull we saw The Bulldog M that had flipped over earlier last year.

Keith, I had a close call last year, with our JD 730, all the weights on the rear, steep trailer, Got just to the top, and the big deere came up, and shifted to one side, One back wheel fell off the ramps, and basicly setting side ways on the steep ramps. The tractor had duals on it, only thing that kept it from coming all the way over. Scared the Sh!T out of me, I have ever yet to try and load that deere on that trailer again, So I use a different one now. I hope you get well soon, you cant keep a good puller down. Take care my freind. ChadS

It's about as easy to unload ALL the weights before loading.

Yep, Know that now!! Would not have found that out unless it happened. Lots of weights, good exercise,, no longer tring to do somethin dangerous. Should have known better, could have unloaded them, did not, learned a lesson, lucky,, that is all I say in my case. I dont wish that to happen to anyone,, we all hear of the horror stories, but, somewhere, someone finds out the hard way how quick, a belived safe situation becomes deadly. Use caution!! take your time, always second guess when it is that important. ChadS

Aren't you guys using wheelie bars? It seems that they would prevent rolling over backwards and weights on a high rack should demand them.

Won't help on ramps with the angle most trailers wind up with. 'specially if you don't have a middle ramp.

Fella down here flipped one unloading by not letting the clutch fully out, foot slipped I assume and over it went;not a pretty sight or as happy an ending! I had one turn over back in '90 didn't get hurt but have never forgotten and the hood is still in the shop too make sure I don't.

I'M NOT A FARMER !! DON'T LIVE IN THE CITY. SOMEWHERE IN THE MIDDLE! WHEN I WAS YOUNG, DAD AND I DROVE IH DOZERS. DIGGING BASEMENTS, AND EXCAVATING. BOUGHT AN IH SM 2 YEARS AGO, BEEN PULLING AS MUCH AS I CAN. I'M READING ALOT OF HOROR STORIES BY EXPERIENCED OPERATORS.
OUR CLUB DOES NOT REQUIRE WHEEL BARS, I THINK IT'S TIME !!! I'M SELF EMPLOYED, A MISTAKE OF THAT NATURE WOULD BE DEVASTATING TO MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER !!! ALL PULLERS PLEASE BE CAREFULL !!
WHEN YOUR RUNNING A LITTLE BEHIND AND GOT TO GO, THIS STUFF HAPPENS. WHEN I WAS 14 MY DAD LOADED A TD-9 ON A TRAILER, IT WAS MY JOB TO TIE IT DOWN AND CHECK THE PINTLE HOOK !! WE CLIMBED IN THE DUMP TRUCK STARTED IT UP, AND THE OLL MAN SAID ARE WE READY. I SAID YEP !! HE SHUT THE TRUCK OFF AND WE WENT FOR A WALK. PINTLE HOOK WASN'T LATCHED !!! I GOT A SWIFT KICK IN THE BUTT, AND SOME SINCERE TALKING TOO, IN A VERY VERY GOOD FATHER-SON EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE !!!
SORRY FOR THE LONG POST !!!
