The D JD and Fordson tractors injected water in manifold for what purpose? I have heard it was for power and performance.Would it be possible on the unstyled JD G,and what would it take to install?Any comments would be appreciated.

The specific heat for water is greater than air, which means that water does not heat up as quickly as air and in turn does not expand as quickly. The latent heat of water is roughly 10 times greater than that of air. Latent heat is how much heat a substance will absorb before changing state (for example from liquid to vapor).
This is significant because while the substance is absorbing latent heat it has very little expansion. In an engine, the intake charge stays denser than it would without water because the water is absorbing heat from the intake system, which means more air/fuel charge in the cylinder. Now if too much water is added it starts to displace room that could have been used for air/fuel, so you have to add just the right amount to make peak horsepower. Ambient air temperature and relative humidity will also effect how much water can be injected. The gains are much greater in a blown engine, especially those with high boost pressures, because the added heat of compression in the intake system has such a large effect on air/fuel density.

Water injection improves power. A friend of mine on his truck he added a super charger and water injection. Water takes up space = more compression

the water was injected to keep the tractor from knocking from preignition for tractors burning kerosene and other low grade fuels. the old rumley oil pulls used almost as much water as they did fuel !
