In the near future I will be running mags on a couple M-M tractors. One will be fairly stock, one moderately cranked up, and one may be wild. In the world of high power pulling engines, what modifications are made to magnetos? Energy? Timing? Anyone out there specialize in mag power? Thanks again fellas.

A stock mag with a good coil and good magnets will fire any of the combinations you listed. The problem is advance. Most mags retard somewhere between 8 and 20 degrees for ease of starting. If you set it to fire at TDC when starting, 8 to 20 degrees advance is all you will get at all rpms above about 400 rpms, no ramp up like a distributor. You can cheat that a little if you have a starter.(5 to 10 degrees more) You can "hop-up" a mag for wild combinations but you must change the coil, the magnets and condensor. They all work together. If you wind a hot coil, standard magnets will not charge the circuit properly and also vise-versa. A bigger condensor is required to hold the larger charge. Don't get me wrong here I have mags on all my tractors (pullers or not) and have no problems. They have to be good and they have to be maintained. Mags do get a bad rap only because people don't understand them and you can't go down to AutoZone and buy parts.

Thank you Mark. Just what I needed. I have an RT w/ distributor that eventually will be lightened up by eliminating starter, battery, etc. The motor will be high compression and running tough. The second tractor is a UTU with a 403. It is set up for a mag, so I prefer to keep it even though I run a starter. The third is not built yet. It is a HD220 and I hope to really build it up. Mags appear to be simple. I'd like to be able to work on one. I'd like my engines to run good at all RPM and not bust my arm when starting.
