dyno hp ratings

First off, hats off to all the vets and service men and women. Thank you for your service to our country!

We had a tractor dyno'd on a friend's dyno the other day. He had a line on a rpm dial that I assumed was 540 rpm. When the engine was put under load and the rpm's dropped to the 540 line on dial, that was the level where we read the hp rating on another guage (which happened to be 45 hp for our tractor). When he really loaded the engine and the engine rpm's lugged down to 1300 to 1400 (est.), the guage for the hp read in the 55 to 60 range.

My question is which hp rating should we go by? I am assuming the we whould use the 45 hp rating instead of the 60hp, but is this an example of where some people can come up with some almost unbelievable hp claims for their tractors? Thanks for your responses.

I think you are meaning that the TORQUE increases...as the engine is pulled down from it's "Rated" speed.. It would take a Monumental torque increase to show up as a HP increase...!!! Because as RPM's decrease, Torque Must Increase, to maintain the Same HP...

Yes, do use the 540 reading . Most of the pullers on here seem to know what they have as far as HP . The reason you see so many tractors with the higher HP is because many of these guys are maxxing out these engine now days. Back in 1992 when I first got started a John Deere ( 2 cylinder) with 100 HP wasnt somthing I thought I would ever see. Now you can go to any weekend pull and see one.

If you want to see a huge difference in a pulling tractor, tune the engine to run when you lug it that hard. always good for a few extra feet during a hard lug on the engine. And,, you may find a few extra ponies at 540,, when you tune it below 540. Dyno tuning a puller, is more than a 540 reading. Also, I call what you describe as a torque curve, or the amount of lugging power the engine can produce. the reading should get stronger when you go past 540,, a properly tuned carb, you can see from a 10 hp increase, all the way up to a 25 hp increase on some engines.
