M Dist. Puzzler

I've got a problem that has all of us stumped. I rebuild an M to 307 cu in. The #1 cylinder will miss at any throttle position until it is put under a load, then it comes back just fine. We've tried all the usual things, points, plug, plug wire, etc.
I put one of ChadS' suggested recurve springs in the dist. mech. advance. Other than that the dist. is untouched.
It seems to be arcing between the moving point and the shaft. But that shouldn't effect just one cylinder. Anybody got any ideas?

CHECK TO MAKE SURE MOTOR IS GROUNDED. RUN A GROUND WIRE DIRECT TO DISTRIBUTOR !!!
HAD A SITUATION WHERE THE TRACTOR WOULD EAT UP POINT'S !! GOT SO BAD IT STARTED HEATING UP COIL! DURING THE PULL MY THOUGHT'S

check your valve springs a weak spring will act like that under load compresion will help keep it closed just my .25 cents tom

try go down on your fuel octan, like if you are running cam blue just try 94 pump gas and see how it acks..when it lugs your putting more fuel, which burns hotter "like pump gas" why it would only do it with one pistion? but thats where i would start....mike

Chasing down a miss is no fun. I know, can be frustrating. It could be a few different things, Here would be a few things to ponder,, A vacuum leak in the intake, or carb. the distributor cap is arching out inside the cap, a valve too tight, or a head gasket. Might be that if you have electronic igntion, the voltage may be too high for the cap to hold the voltage. Hope this helps, Chad

Switched from an Accel to MSD coil, but both were 40,000V. It always handled the old one fine.
We swapped out the Delco dist. with an IH one and it runs fine. Think it's arcing in the dist. I'd like to go back to the Delco. What do I need to do to fix the arcing? Shaft isn't bend or loose. Someone suggested a worn lobe.
By the way, put your spring in yesterday. Going to try it out this weekend. Will probably need 3-4 more at least.

Check your valve lash. Sounds like you may have a tight valve. Also are you running an aftermarket camshaft? The base circle of cam can have run-out
and if you set clearence normally you can have a tight valve on compression tdc. Set your valves at compression tdc and set both intake and exhaust. You may also want to do a compression test first to see if this could be your problem.

Checked the valves. All are opening & closing like normal. 150 psi on all 4 holes. Stock Cam but 1 tooth advanced.
