My plug hole on the number 1 cylinder has bad threads ,but the plug still tightens down pretty good. However, when I turn the engine over by hand I can hear a little compression leaking out. I know this wont hurt the engine ,but I was wondering if Locktite might help or somthing like that. I just got the engine back together and I really dont want to take it apart just yet . It seem to be running better now that I got rid of the Merfeld pistons and cam. Any help with my plug problems would be greatly appreciated Thanx Tyler

Not sure on the size of your plugs... but you might be able to try the spark plug adapters from REAM... (After reading ChadS reply..) I guess U could JBWeld them in..... JDGnut

If I'm not entirely wet, the threads don't do the sealing, they just hold the plug tight against the seat, which does the sealing. Maybe the seat has a ding or scratch in it that is preventing the plug from sealing. If that is the case, it will take more than new threads to get a good seal, the seat will have to be corrected also.

My 2 cents...not necessarily a bargain.---ToddF

Doesnt the block have to be removed to do this or can it be done with everything still in placs?

I think I'd go with a solid thread repair inset rather than a helicoil, and I think you could do it on the tractor as long as your careful about shavings.

What is a solid thread repair insert Ive never heard of this . What does it take to install this and can it be done while the engine is together or not? I get a little leakage but not much I wonder if its even enough to worry about?

If you can't buy one, a good machine shop could make it. Just a solid sleeve with the I.D. threaded the same as your spark plug. Then you'd drill and tap the block for a larger thread on the O.D. of the sleeve.

This may sound unorthadox, but, I had a A that had stripped the plugs out, I have a spark plug tap, I cleaned them with the tap, then put in JB weld in the threads of the block, let it harden, and then retapped the hole with the plug tap. Good as new. still running today. and the plug hole still is in great shape! Only other alternative is to put the bigger plugs in it, like from the unstyled tractors that had the bigger plug. Just my thoughts, ChadS
