It's an electronic ignition box. MSD is the name-brand, and it also stands for Multiple Spark Discharge, which means that during the spark plug firing sequence, it will actually fire multiple times instead of just once. I think this occurs at all speeds under 3000 rpm. The 6A is their most popular box, and they also make a 6AL which has a built-in rev-limiter, as well as a few other models for various performance levels and applications. To make a long story short, it makes a hotter spark and several of them, improving performance. And no, they're not hard at all to hook up. They also have a tachometer hook-up, and make sure you don't get the wires crossed. We installed one on our pulling truck, and in the process of hooking it up, got the tach and ignition wires mixed up, as the wire changed colors about four times between the tach and the box (farmer engineering you know). It ran, but not for very long.

The set up with the electronic points works well with a 6A model. When wiring this up use there 'amplifier' diagram to hook up.It will clean your idle up and you won't see much of a difference on a dyno but you will notice a difference on the track.

You can use both at the same time. An electronic ignition set-up isn't going to give you the multiple sparks that the MSD box will, but even by itself, an electronic ignition will make a pretty big difference in starting and throttle response. I don't know if you could measure the horsepower difference between an electronic set-up and a properly dwelled set of good points or not.
