JD 70 with Pertronix and MSD 6A help needed.

I have the pertronix kit #1121, their flame thower coil1.5 ohms #40011, and a 6a msd box. I am getting ready to put these items on my 70 JD. My question is do I need a ballast resistor? My dad seems to think the coil presently on the tractor has a built in resistor? (he bought this coil) Is there a way of telling if I need a resistor or not without harming any of the above mentioned parts?

1.5 ohm coils need a ballast when running to be fed 6.0V. 3.0 ohm coils run direct on 12V. 0.6 ohm race coils need variable dwell control smart ignition boxes such as the Pertronics Ignitor II modual.

pertronix coils have res built in they do not need ballest res. and with Msd 6 according to instructions you do not need resistor. BUT with Msd coil and Pertronix ing you do need a resistor.I know because I just burnt one up,because I did not have a resistor.

Haha... I did the same thing a few months ago.. for got to check the resistance of the MSD Coil... (.6) it popped about two times.. and was dead... There went $75...

B&D... This will be the 10th year on my 1.5Ohm coil and PX pickup on my G with no resistor.. It got its share of hrs baling hay... before it became a pulling tractor with no problems...

Someone had a wiring diagram post a good while back... Anyone????

and if you're putting it on a deere they'll tell you that you need a 3 ohm resistor, not the dinky .8 NAPA always wants to give you. You'll still fry the pertronix. oh and something about if you're using the msd coil you've gotta wire it different. They thought to tell me that also after I fried the pertronix.

Which pertronics coil? There is the 40,000 volt 0.6 ohm, 1.5 ohm and 3.0 ohm units in black or chrome oil and the black epoxy unit. Also a 32,000 volt agricultural unit with 2.8 ohms input. The 1.5 ohm units need a ballast resitor when used with points or simple electronic controls. The 2.8/3.0 ohm coils work fine wired 12V direct through points or simple eklectronic switches such as the origional Pertronics. The 0.6 ohm Blitzburg Ultra Mega Turbo requires a smart electronci control box such as an Ignitor II or a MSD type box.

I hav MSD 6al ignition on my 460, I still use the points as a trigger device instead of electronic ignition, I also have a MSD blaster coil, no resistor, It usually says on the side of the coil if a resistor is needed, only way I can tell you what to look for, is when the engine is running for a while, check to see if the coil is hot to the touch, if it is, it will need a resistor. If I remember right the instructions with the MSD told if the resister was needed?
