460 puller

Just brought home a Farmall 460. I was hoping to build it for pulling. This is my first tractor that I have built that is not an Oliver. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do. I am planning on rebuilding it, not sure yet on how radical that I might go. If you guys have any suggestions let me know. Thanks.

Bolt a IH 301 engine in the 460 and go have fun, of course you will have to claim its a 1959 to be legal at some pulls.

A 301 would be the best choice for a great budget. A combine 301, out of the 715 combines. you have the higher rpm single arm governors.Also have the biggest carb. You could go with a truck engine rebuild kit, and then you can use the truck head. The truck head is like the LP head to the letter series farmalls. you can only use flat top pistons with the truck heads, it is a very shallow compression chamber. Most of the work is in the carb and ignition. the IH 6 needs a hot ignition to keep the plugs alive in it. They have a very high vacuum pressure, and can gulp large amounts of fuel and air. Electronic ignition is a must, and a good hot coil. A recurve kit in the mechanical advance in the distributor will help with the famous IH 6 cyl stutter upon engine accelleration. The ignition is very slow in these engines, and they do like the timing advanced on them, around 30 deg adv. The rest is getting the carb to handle the air and the fuel. Hope this helps a bit. Chad

use the flywheel and clutch assembly from the 460-560 and yes bolts right in.

I dont think the 560 flywheel will go in a 460, it is larger diameter.

Yep, they are different. 460 is much smaller, like an H with an extension where it bolts on. What I meant was use 460 on 460, 560 on 560, and will bolt in. Chad

I am working on it, not as much as I have been lately, but walking by it and kicking the tires and thinking bout it. I can get into 3500 for sure by changing out the front bolster and the front weight bar. Still all stock, and heavy! Our club is having a practice pull coming up, and I may take it up there to see If I can balance it out. I can run it without any kind of weight on the front, and be confident that it would be a good starting point for this tractor. no weights on the nose, it was 1350# a bit heavy in my opinion, but if it decides to hook up, it will pick it up.
