I THINK WITH ALL THE TIME AND MONEY MOST OF US HAVE IN OURTRACTORS CHECKING RPMS UNDER ANO LOAD SITUATION PUTS UNDO STRESS ON MOTORS AS WELL AS DANGER TO WHOEVER IS CHECKING NOT TO MENTION TIME AND PERSONEL.I PUT A AUTO METER TACH ON MY H TO DETERMON WHAT RPM = 5MPH THE TACH HAS RECALL SO IT WILL TELL YOU AND OR OFFICALLS WHAT MAX RPM YOU TURNED DURING PULL .SEEMS TO ME $83 IS A SMALL PRICE TO PAY FOR SAFETY AND TIME SAVED .ALL TRACTORS COULD BE CHECKED AT FINAL WIEGH IN PLUS KEEP EVERYONE HONEST. WHAT DO Y'ALL THINK?

Why not require side shields and scatter blankets if you are pulling above DIV II and not have RPM limits at all ? They are hard to enforce. The limits are unfair to many tractors and there is no way everyone will ever agree on them. Put the proper safety equipment in place and let them pull. Side shields and scatter blankets are much less complicated.

Well I will put my two cent "Opinion in weather people want to hear it or not. Fist any safe antique tractor engine that is running 30% or less should and can be tached plain and simple. If the operator or owner thinks the engine is not durable enough to stand 30% over no load it shouldn't even be started, get it away from the crowed it should not be allowed anywhere near the crowed if it can't stand 30%. Now as for checking RPM at higher speeds I do agree that a "sled" tach should be used. This system is used in many organizations now and is catching on. To participate in theses higher RPM limited classes all tractors has to have a standard speed sensor on the front pulley or flywheel for the tach on the sled to monitor pulling tractor RPM while it is hooked to the sled. If the pulling tractor exceeds the limit they DQed themselves plain and simple. Tach on sled will lock on highest RPM. Same Tach to judge everybody, driver has no say or control of this tach.

A friend of mine has a Recall tach and the more you flip the tell switch the more RPM"S it show's. He has sent it back twice and it checks out OK. Why couldn't you use a MSD box that uses the Rev limiter chips? That way at the begining of the track a Tech guy (or girl) could put the desired chip in. I know easier said than done! Shaggy

I don't have a problem with it, but the only pull we go to that really checks is Sigourney. All the rest are purely on a contest system. But I'm not a big threat so they don't worry about us, yet.
Some people aren't too keen on the idea of doing an RPM check for our new Hot Rod class though. Something about rapping an Econo rod stock V8 to 5000 RPM for a check has people nervous. I've tried to get them to use a recall tach. That way all you'd have to do is crack it and peak the tach instead of run wide open until a crank meter levels off enough for a good reading.

It could be a very dangerous situation checking rpm to the tech crew. You never know what could happen, it could pull and run well, then the tach gets put on and it may blow up during the no load wide open rpm. Seen some big Olivers blow the competition away, then get tached, and then they self destructed during the rpm check! I like the tell tale tach idea, but each time someone mentions this idea at our local clubs, the always say that they are not accurate. It is an honesty issue when the rpm checks come into play, he who hides it the best, passes the check! LOL! I do not like the idea of checking rpm while pulling down the track. the rules say that the rpm is checked "No Load" to me, this is a big difference! If you pass tech inspection, rpm checks, then pull, then rpm checked again, and pass, then whatever happens on the track is fair game. May not sound honest there, but that is why pulling is the way it is today! Just look at NATPA!! Rpm limits are a safety issue. And who can blame them at all. If the world was perfect, there would be no arguement, all that has to happen is some one gets killed due to an over rapped engine that explodes the flywheel. Then everyone would either respect the rules, or not pull at all. But if a pull is checking rpms on a regular basis, pullers, follow the rules, the tech crew will appreciate not having to argue, and the extra time it takes to determine whether you are a good ol boy, and let you pass, over or not! LOL Just my opinion. ChadS

I get really tired of the RPM as a "safety issue" excuse, there are pulls all over the country that have insurance and run open RPM classes. Of course you must have all safety equpt. including steel flywheel. Div. 5 should be open rpm, making differant classes by 10% in RPM's is the stupidist idea ever, if you want to run a limited class run Dvi. 4 let div. 5 run.

Where do you pull "North of 8 Rebel"? I am always interested in pulls like that.
