It is always funny to me when, at a pull or show,a near new looking tractor gets off the trailer everybody shoes up to check it out find the flaws and what not.everybody does their own tech inspection on the spot however when a tractor looking fresh off the farm gets unloaded it goes completely unnoticed( unless it wins).what do you all prefer? paint or no paint? i like them without and the rustier the better

got a theory about paint
1) good tires
2) good motor
3) figure out how to drive it
4) paint last !
i did the 4-3-1-2 rotation !!!!

still working on (2)

We pull a couple MM's with virtually no paint. It's fun to see the reactions when they win. They don't get noticed as much because they don't shine but that's not a bad thing either. It's fun to have a sleeper.

The first pull I took my unstyled "G" to after I painted it up a guy came up to me before I ever got it hooked to the sled and told me "It takes more than fancy paint to make a pulling tractor" As he was a seasoned puller with a big mouth and tough running / looking "G". After I pulled against him and mopped his A$$ real good he never spoke to me again. There is allot of good looking and running tractor out there too. What ones tractor looks like allot of time is directly related to the workmanship that went into it, not always but quite often. JMHO Dave W.

There is a guy we pull with that runs a couple 460's and used to run a 560. If he got beat one weekend, the tractor would be sporting a new paint job the next weekend and he'd be winning again. I think that 460 went through 3 paint jobs one year.
We all joke when the guys with the fancy paint get beat that if they'd given it another coat or two of wax they'd have won.

I appreciate the attention to detail some guys have on their machines. Yet, nothing has quite the effect as beating their pants off with a big old rusty piece of s***! I have a nice ugly crew of MM at my place. No paint yet. As for me, I like to hear a darn good motor tuned up real well. That is what a tractor is all about.

I'm with you my saying is PAINT DON'T PULL!I've got the ugliest bent up super m that you will ever see no paint what so ever but boy it turned some heads at dekalb pull a couple years ago when it was sitting in the lead for most off the class until someone finally got by me OH WELL! it was funny watching guys looking at it scratching their heads trying to figure out how that piece of junk just kicked their a$$ if guys put as much time into mechanics as they do their paint this sport would be alot more competive on second thought keep on paintin em

Man, there for minute I thought you were talking about my old rusty 88. Was gonna paint it, but then couldn't tell it from the other 88. Fairly clean and straight, not much paint but can usually handle a sled well.

Hey if you really want to have fun with one and the paint do this. Only paint like the valve cover and the head. You'll be amazed how much more attention it will get at the next pull by the guys trying to figure out "what ya done to it" LOL!!!!! I went from a stock hitch setup on my 88 to a pulling hitch set to the legal limits and it made about 30-40 ft difference in how i pulled. I also painted where the head and block meet so with a spray can. Hahaha some folks are still wondering how I go that head worked on in less than a week! The old motor is still the same and still stock but I learned real quick how much of a difference 2 inches of hitch height makes. Sure was fun listening to those guys wonder though..... .

My motto is: It has to pull good before it looks good.
