The reason when use a pace tractor is because the eliminator that we had borrowed didn't have a horn. It had an electronic distance reader, but no horn. There where only a few classes that were paced. An equal amount of classes were open speed, and a few (what we call near stock classes). The real problem was the fact that everybody knows the rules about staying with the pace tractor, and some didn't do it. It's an unspoken, but very well known rule. The worst thing was that the tractor pull was for the Children's Hospital Foundation of Wisconsin. Things are beinging to settle down now, and for all those of you who are interested we are still having the pull in Weyauwega, Wisconsin on May 22, 2004. Thanks for your responses Marlow and Brian. It's good to hear feedback from those who were actually there. I know when my Dad gets home he'll be excited to hear that some people are behind him. We are also working on trying to change those people minds who feel that stock classes don't need any safety equipment (i.e. Kill Switches, etc.). We really don't want to have that happen again. For that one person who said that we weren't checking draw bars that is a fabrication. If you don't know the whole story please don't make up whatever you feel like. The real fact of the matter is we are all extremely happy to know that that driver is alive and well today, and able to pull another day. Just for those who weren't there the driver later came back and pulled again, and won either second or third place in another class.

Mark you don't know the whole story about the hitch on that stock tractor. I'll set the facts straight. The fact is that the owner admitted to haven taken out the bolts on the hitch the night before and didn't replace them because he didn't have long enough bolts. When the tractor came over the scale it had 2 200lb. weights chained to the hitch. When the hitch was checked it was stable. We only knew about the hitch being floating after the tractor tipped. Only the 12,000 lb. eliminator had the force to bend the hitch up and that is why the tractor flipped over. The RPM checking was going on, but they randomly picked tractors to test. The fact of the matter is that people where changing their tractors after being checked. I know for a fact that the same kind of things were happening in Sigorney, Iowa. People there were also changing their tractors before hooking up to the eliminator. We completely understand your worries about the wheelie bars on some tractors that had them. We too noticed the weakness of some of them and that their pads would be too small to be of any help. When know that side shields should be mandatory, as well as saftey blankets. We know and implement that sort of things on our tractor, with the new edition being side shields. We have been trying to get through to those who pull the stock classes that safety should take issue over the tractor being actually stock. The problem is that every pull around our area who also have stock classes do not require such saftey equipment that we would like enforced. According to the rules of the rest of the pulls, tractors with that type of safety equipment would no longer be stock. Untill you put on a tractor pull and have to deal with these sorts of issues , you may not understand. Or maybe you do put on tractor pulls and don't have the same stubborn people that we have to deal with. I'm not trying to make excuses, because I know that things need to be changed. We all realize this. I guess I'm just trying to show where were are coming from. Just to let everyone know that even after that tractor tipped over, some people who pull stock classes were still trying to argue that saftey equipment was not needed. They were arguing that the only reason that tractor tipped over was because of the floating hitch. Some people just don't get it!

I would have to agree with Mark, I was there and I don't think some of the wheelie bars I saw where fit to even be on a lawn mower. That's to say nothing of the unchecked rpms.

I am not fabricating anything. If you were checking for floating drawbars, why did the tractor flip over? No need to convince people to have the wheelie bars on even in stock class. Its either its on there or it is not gonna hook to the sled. No exceptions. Your dad is in charge of the rules. Would he be allowed to hook in Sigourney Iowa without wheelie bars or a kill switch? I am not triing to cut you or your dad down at all, I am just triing to say that some rules need to be changed before someone gets killed, and ends this sport for all of us.

Should wheelie bars and kill switches be on stock pulling tractors? That's a debate that we can sit around and discuss forever. But the problem that should be addressed is enforcing the rules. The rule I'm talking about is the flagman flagging a tractor whose front wheels exceed the heighth limit. I've pulled for 14 years and when I started, the flagmen at all the pulls flagged the tractor when the front wheels exceede 24 inches or knee heighth. Over the years this rule has become less and less enforced. These rules were made for a reason and we need to keep them enforced.

The hitch had weights on it,and appeared to be solid. With the weight on it it couldnot be picked by hand, but once on the sled,it was enough to make it float up.
