I found this picture on the internet. I am building one like it except I am running the vertical piece through the draw bar. The height of the hole for the clevis on mine is about 3 1/2 inches above the drawbar for a max height of 20 inches (ground to hole) to abide by our local rules. The hole in the picture looks like it's only 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch above the draw bar. My question is, does anyone think the 3 1/2 inch distance between the hole and drawbar will give the hitch too much of a mechanical leverage advantage causing the front end of tractor to come off the ground? The hitch is going to be mounted on a John Deere 50. Thank you for any input.

Not sure all rules will allow a hitch like this. Because the way the clevis is attached allows for it to swivel up and down, thus allowing your hitch height to vary. Most rules state you have to have a strong, rigid, stationary hitch that can not move at hitching point.

would also depend on size of hook (on sled) if the hook wedges in the clevis, it may help or hurt. Many places call for a 3" hole. Don

It would be more important to see how the drawbar is fastened to the bottom casting of the tractor and if the hitch ever breaks or pulls out then it won't bother the weight braket and will be free to pull out completely. Some way you should leave room for your wheelie bars and fasten them to the axle without bothering the hitch if it has to pull out. Also a kill switch would be another good safety factor. NATPA has a good outline of how a hitch and wheelie bars should be built on thier website.
