How much compression can my tractor have before it will need somthing more than pump gas? I have an allis chalmers wd with 190lbs of compression and it wants to ping under load.I have tried changing the timing it didn't help. I have changed the carb and played with it I have super unleaded gas in it,but it still pings under load. Any Ideas? Thanks Vance

There are no hard and fast rules pertaining to maximum compression ratios with "X" amount of octane in the gasoline. Factors like bore diameter, combustion chamber design, piston design, engine temp, cylinder head material, engine load and about a thousand others affect what octane is needed to prevent detonation and pinging. I'd keep bumping up the octane level until it doesn't ping at the settings you want to run it at.

One thing you can try is a colder spark plug they can heat upand cause pre detonation
