I recently saw a Deere 4000 and was informed it was a lighter tractor, yet had the 4020 motor. Would it make a good light puller? I'm not a Deere fella, but I bet this has been tried. What is the difference between a 4020 and 4000?

I know of a 4000 Deere that does very well pulling 8000#-12,000# classes.

Mopower, For the most part the two tractors are the same with the exception of the 4000 having a little less sheet metal and lighter wheels and axle shafts. The 4000 also has lighter three point hitch arms like the later 3020's but the rockshaft is the same as the 4020. The engine and transmission are the same only the 4000 does not have a reverse synchronizer on the top shaft. The two tractors use the same parts book. So when you strip a 4000 down to pull the only thing you gained over the 4020 is a .125 smaller axle diameter from the outer bearing out to the end. By the way, this axle is obsolete and if failed you get a 4020 axle to replace it. Allot of rumors that the 4000 had a 3020 rear end, this is not true as a parts book will show. DW
