140# is pretty good. Have you ran the engie at all? Once it gets broke in, and the rings seated the pressure will increase, you will probably have 150 by the time is said and done. 4-1/8 is a 281ci, See? gets better right? lol I would get it broke in, then start tuning, if you tune it now, you will be a bit off because of the changing conditions inside the engine due to break in. Some have said to break them in at different throttle increments for about 1-2hrs, start low rpm, then gradually work your way up to full throttle. or use a dyno, takes a shorter time, but is better for the engine. Some tips for tuning, is the carb, governor, and igntion work. Lots of guys think that it is HP you look for when tuning, but you are looking for changes in the engines running characteristics. The carb, governor, ignition, are engine control components. they control, throttle response, and timing changes at different rpm. you see, these parts are so heavy duty, that they don't really do anything to enhance performance, they are designedto run in the fields all day long, with fuel consumption in mind. there is 3 things you will see a difference, when you change them, first, is the springs in the mechanical advance in the distirbutor. when increasing performance, this is where to start. get a Chevy recurve kit, and use either the lightes, to second lightest spring in the kit to replace the heavy stock ones. it will speed up the igntion timing, it does not affect the amount of full advance, but just speeds it up!! Picks up throttle response. then the carb, drill the main jet in the bowl, and the 2 lower holes in the metering stem, (brass stem in the center of the carb bowl) now many say "what size to drill it? well they are not all the same, one size does not fit all!!! find the bit that fits the jet, then get 4 or 5 sizes larger than the size of the jet. this will change the fuel going to the engine, it will allow the engine to lug very hard, and still get plenty of fuel, when you lug em hard, you need more fuel!!! Otherwise, the tradidtional spit, sputter, and dies on the track, or the plow!! LOL, then get a governor spring. after you have done 2 out of the 3, you are ready to turn up the governor. this will really increase throttle response, and lugging capability, did you know, that with a stock spring, in the governor, as rpm drop when you lug it hard it will shut the governor down and shut off the carb!! You know what happens when that happens? you stall out faster. So really, it is not HP you are looking for, it is the way the engine runs on the track. most, they just build a big stroker, and can't make it run, these items I mentioned, are what is the problem. and hey!!
