I have been looking for a RD 501 engine for our W-40, and then I saw the post about how the 501's have the bigger cam, when I thought all they had was a half inch longer stroke. Is there truly a diffrence in the 450 and 501, if so I need to change what I'm looking for. Also I would like too know if the front cover off our stock W-40 engine will fit on the RD-450, or 501. Would like to know from someone who has worked on a project like this, and is not just blowin smoke. Thanks JJ

The 501 has a raised cam shaft to clear the extra stroke. The cover off the tractor will bolt on but the govenor gear wont mesh. You could use a belt driven gov which would let you run a more normal style of carb. The 450 will work with the front cover and gov but the crank nose is bigger and must be turned down and rekeyed. The bolt patter on the flywheel is the same but the truck uses bigger bolts so the flywheel has to be drilled out.

hutsons tractor uses a tractor block as mandated by the pulling sanction..truck blocks supposedly not allowed..the 450 is a removable sleeve engine and the front cover and balancer pully off of the tractor motor will fit with little modification..the 501 is not sleeved and crank snout is bigger so balancer and pully wont fit without modification..same with the front cover..more modification...make sure before you install one of these motors that your sanction allows because its easy to spot a truck motor instead of the tractor motor ....manifolds off of the tractor motor will bolt on and work but most people make theirs and again if it has to look stock then use the updraft style carb..if it doesnt then the downdraft manifold and carb on the truck motor will work fine

I believe if you look, he has a "new" engine; looks a little different than his old one?

i didnt see a pic of his engine so dont know what a new one versus old one is..however we run 2 w-40's one with a tractor block and one with a 401 truck motor and i can tell you that there is a difference between the two as far as freeze plugs..id locations and so on ...i thought the 501 also had a 5 inch stroke...maybe someone could enlighten me please?

My recommendation is that you go to www.oldihc.org and ask on the "General Technical Discussion" forum. There are a LOT of folks over there who really know their stuff on the RD-series of engines, and while they may not have ALL the info you want, they will more than likely be able to give you the straight scoop on the engine itself. And THAT will be a little more than you have now.

One other question I forgot to ask is what type of manifold system would work best, the one our tractor now is cracked really bad and will most likley fall into pices when I take it off. Will one work off of something else, or do I need to do a custom job. JJ

Manifolds from stationary powerplants(u series) are updraft. U series have dual exhausts. Believe a manifold end from a truck will reduce to one outlet. Industrial equipment, such as pavement rollers, have updraft setups. Don't worry about truck engine whining. IH trucks used the same engine as th T40 and W40 tractors. Newer
engines have freeze plugs, but is a factory replacement for the fbb. W40 engine made it's debut in 1932,three years before the tractor!!

Ask Jim Hutson or just look at his W-40 that he pulls in Div 4.
