I'm looking for info on what would be the better choice for a small(light) pulling tractor. Cost is the big factor both initial and maintenance. It looks like Farmall A's & B's and Allis Chalmers B's & CA's seem to be popular choices. If anyone has experience with these your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Kevin

Look for something like a Case VC or a Massey 101jr with a Continental F series 4cyl. Alot came with 124 cid motors, but 162 cid motors will bolt right in. Parts are cheap and easy to get also. I think some of the Red Seal power units that used these motors were about 50 horse! Install the bigger motor, cut the head, maybe some bigger valves, easy horsepower! Good luck!

I'm not sure what level you'd like to pull at, but the little General tractors as well as a B.F. Avery type really can pull well. They have a Hercules engine. I believe the Farmalls and Hercules motors have a small advantage to the Allis because of the better bore to stroke ratio. 4 inch stroke in the Hercules and Farmall compared to a shorter one in the Allis. If you wanted to go heavier slightly, a Moline R or 335 would be a couple options, but I am a MM nut so it's only my 2cents.

Get a Allis Chalmers WC. Their just as reasonable in price as a ferguson, or the farmall a's and b's and i've only been beat 2 time running a completly stock motor in the past 5 years. Then if you later want to have more hp you can build the engine up to 75+ hp. I've seen a 1938 WC pull 83 hp on the dyno turning stock rpms. There an execlet tractor to pull and you'll have a lot of fun.

How much money did it cost to get a motor that origionally had less than 30 hp up to 85 hp?

WC & WD AC's used to dominate the light classes, because many of the parts from later models are interchangable. Take a crank out of a WD & you get 1/4" stroke. As mentioned, a D17 will bolt in. Get a combine motor for more or at least the carb & manifold. An RC rear end is ligher. A buddy pulls a stock WC in 3250-4500#. You'd have to talk to a real AC guy but I know the best combination is a "pick-a-piece" (one piece from here, one from there).

A D-17 motor will drop in & that is 54hp, shouldnt take much to get more hp out of that.
