401 450 and 501 all had 1/2 inch more stroke than the smaller engines..401 and 450 will fit in a w-40 if changing front cover and balancer will fit..501 has larger crank snout so front cover and balancer need to be modified..would be helpful if you indicated what tractor you were working on?...also 450 and 401 had removable sleeves and 501 did not..most info on the motors are available in the old motors books that were put out for servicing big trucks. the truck blocks are easy to detect because of the pad on front that is stamped with the size and also the freeze plugs that are not found in the tractor blocks. so be sure that your pulling organization will aloow for non stock blocks...

The RD engines seem to be the engine of choice for IH W-40, 460-560-660. Heck, 199 hp stock (RD450)at 3000 rpm and little work to put it in, who wouldn't run one? Just my 2 cents, Chads

The 501 is the same block as the 450. I would say that anywhere from 250-1000 price range. 250 being needed rebuilt but runs, and 1000 being complete and maybe rebuilt or low milage. It will fit.

Where do you guys come up with information about what truck engines will fit what tractors? Just curious. Which IH trucks had a big engine that would fit in my 460?
