The 403 had a 263ci 6 cyl. the 503 had a 282?? Gas engine. The 715 had the 301. The truck head is a plus,, it is like the lp heads for the letter series farmalls. BUT, you have to run a flat top piston. The 403 263 is a good engine,, to start with it is a sleeveless block, and the walls are very thick. could be bored out to 4 in very easily! You could go bigger, just depends on what you want to do. A good 301 can make anywhere from 85-100 hp, with the truck head it will be more. The combine engines do have a different piston than the tractors,, they are a fire crater design,, but have a taller dome than the tractor engines, Since it has a truck head for sure??? I would guess that it is a truck 301, the combine pistons cant be used with the truck head. I have a 263 in my 460H puller. I left it stock as I could as far as the engine,, I tuned and tuned it, got it running very strong for a 263. If you want to make a powerful 301,, use the tractor head, with 806 lp high altitiude pistons. Compression will be over 200 with a good cam, and the right carb. Hope this helps, I am going through my options for my 460 engine too!! ChadS
