I am 19 and have been pulling since I was about 7 or 8. I started out on my dad's D John Deere and then moved on to a late model A with the creeper 1st gear. After laying out of pulling a couple of years I decided to build a pulling tractor. I am very excited about getting it together and was wondering what I sould expect from it. Here is what I've got. A John Deere gas 70, 9 3/4 stroke and 6 1/8 bore. I shaved the head enough to remove some of the eyebrows on it and the casting numbers where the bottom water pipe bolts on. I haven't sent my carb off to be worked over yet (any info?). Right now I am going to be using a stock distribtor any ideas on what I should run later(electronics?). I have gotten rid of the cast centers, had a flat back made for it, I am going to run a lawn mower fuel tank, I am also going to replace the heavy radator with a small light weight unit. What else can I do to lose weight? I am not going to run cut tires on it for a while. What do you think this thing will do? Thank for your replies.

Well James, what do ya think of the answers so far? Too bad people with nothing to say type answers anyway eh? I don't know much about Deeres, but boring and stroking them seems to be the way to make 'em competitive. If the stock dist fires the plugs every stroke there is nothing to be gained from hotter setups. Do NOT neglect the tires they are the key to winning once you have the power to spin them. Unlike the jealous G-Taylor types, I am happy that you have the funds to play hard, good luck!

Not jealous, just being practical. That's why for now pulling cheap & stock was mentioned. Prefer to have my cake & eat it too.

Not to dampen your enthusiasm but where are you getting the $$$ & if you have the $$$ maybe it should be mostly invested in property, equipment or investments that will pay back. Can't raise & feed a family in or on a souped pulling tractor There is room for some of both if you pull stock & cheap locally. There will always be someone out there with more $$$ however to win. Most people with the coin to spend now do so because they planned, educated, worked & invested in their youth. If you cut that much off the head already there will likely be excess compression & interference problems after stroking. If & a big if airflow could be achieved a 412 cu inch model 70 at 1500 rpm should make approx 100HP.

I am in the process of doing what you are trying to accomplish!
I am 17, and have been also pulling since I was about 10. I pull a pretty beefed up John Deere G. I have been debating to go to either a 70D or a 4010. This is a big defference, but they will work in the classes I intend to pull in...

PLEASE SEND ME WHAT INFO YOU CAN GIVE ME, AND THE REPLYS' THAT YOU MAY GET. ALSO ANY ADVICE THAT YOU CAN GIVE ME.

Thank you
