I know you guys are the people to talk to about classic pulling tractors, and I will always come to you for advice when it comes to anything built before 1970's. However, I am looking at a John Deere 4840 that was in a fire and is way to cheep to let slide. I am thinking it it time to get rid of that last bit of "discressionary income" Where do I go to get info on Pulling at the ATPA level? Also, I don't see many of these pulling, is there a reason for this? Thanks....

buy it,strip it and trade the rear and tranny for a 4010/4020 rear and tranny.if the yards won't trade sell the rear and tranny and buy a 4010/4020 rear and tranny, keep the 466.

What FIFTHGEARDEERE and JDBert said. The 4840 was only offered with powershift here in North America, but I believe it was offered for export with the Quad-Range. At any rate, the only difference between a 4640 and 4840 other than the horsepower is the final drives, so you could put together a 4840 Quad-Range. They ARE heavy and there are much lighter Deeres with more engine out there. Something like a 4055 springs to mind. If it's really to cheap to let go, buy it and pull farm stock or something. Tuned up, running good and weighted to the max, it would be a contender in something like an 18.500 class. In the heavy classes down home, it's always the same 6030 and 4640 QR going back and forth for the win.

Leeker, I would guess the reason you dont see them pulling is because 4840's were only offered with the 8 speed power shift tranny. You could try www.pulloff.com and see it theres anything for ya there.

TOO HEAVY - 4240 HAD BASICALLY SAME 466 CID MOTOR. PROSTOCK ALLOWS 466 BLOCKS WITH 4010 REAR ENDS OR 619 IN 5010/6030. MOST 4840/4850 ARE 6030'S WITH 619 ENGINES. MOST 4440'S OR 7800'S ARE 4010'S WITH 466 ENGINES. NOT ALL. 4840 WOULD BE HEAVY. THEY MIGHT LET YOU USE 619. POWER SHIFT CAN HANDLE AT LEAST DOUBLE THE HP BUT NOT SUPER FARM TYPE HP.
