I have a 47 A JD and have removed the motor. I am ready to go to the machine shop and I am looking for some serious power out of this two banger. Any sugestions on how big to bore?, change crank?, change timing?, change rods to "Stroke"?, of course major head work will need to be done. Bigger valves?, Cam?, Carb?,. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

6 1/8" X 9 is a good reliable engine size, yes you can go bigger, but I would not want to own a time bomb. You will need to open up the head and manifold install larger valves, and use a DLTX 51 carb, or have a DLTX 71 modified. Some will say different, but I would not fool with the cam - if yours is a late '47 gas it will use the same cam as a 60 JD. You will get a thousand different opinions, but Schooler or Merfeld should be used for crankshaft work.

What pulling class/weight and how deep are your pockets? Try her bone stock with a creeper 1st gear in the 5500 & 6500lb classes. Work you way up later after you figure out tires, balance & the hitch length. Go to a pull. Machines with lots of wheel speed and power get beat all the time by some putt putter in 1st gear and ideal setup. Happened to me by the same old B three times before getting traction figured out.

Your going to need a lot of power, due to the high first gear on the 47A,it has about twice the speed of the later As,in 1st gear.
