Which is better.... a pulling John Deere R, or a John Deere 830. Why?

virtually no difference in div.1 or 2.however if you reaaly want to build a big bad 2 cyl diesel. an 80-830 is the place to start. an R has only two main bearings and if leaned on hard and long enough the cranks can and do fail. a 9"x 6.25" combo with big pumps can turn out probably 125 horse. probably near a 100 with 8"x6.125. they make 8"power blocks for the 80-830 9" crank could get you well over 200 horse.Paul
