I'm looking for the dimensions for a John Deere 5.5" A piston. I'm trying to consider using these in an old McCormick Deering but need the actual dimensions for all aspects of the piston so I can consider its feasibility. If anyone can help me out it would be deeply appreciated and may keep me from having to make custom pistons.

Thanks in advance.

5.75" Aircraft Pistons with approx. 2.75" Compression Height. Piston with Rings, Pin, "Pin-Buttons" and Rod for $140. Rods Weld Easily to Bottom End of Other Rods. Assume You're Working on 22-36.

There are several different manufacturers' for aftermarket aluminum pistons, and compression heights will vary a little. I have info for 2 different John deere cast iron, and M&W AP126, all for "A" or "60". All will have a 1.75" wrist pin. The all fuel JD piston is 7.5" overall ht,4.825" compression ht (center of wrist pin to top), .65" from top to top of 1st ring (flat top). JD cast iron gas is 8.185 overall ht, 5.46" comp ht,(cupped crown) and M&W 8.32" overall ht,5.625 comp ht(cupped crown). all have 5 rings with the oil ring below the wrist pin, but that can be moved above the pin to the bottom compression ring groove by widening the groove and drilling drainback holes. M&W also had a LP piston available. used cast iron pistons should be easy to find in 5.5"size, but aftermarket aluminum ones will be harder to find in standard size as most would be .045,.090, or .125" overbore overbore. the 620/630 pistons are also 5.5" and factory aluminum (I think) but I don't have the compression ht on those. Mike,

Excellent info... thanks! I can certainly go with a little larger bore but about 5 5/8 is about all the room I've got. Thanks again for all your help.

I would think that the A pistons would be heavy.. compared to some of the other pistons... I know of some other 5.5 JD pistons.. but they will be hard to find... Just thinking that a lighter pistons with a longer rod would be a better setup... Just on the outside looking in..... JDGnut

Yes I agree about the weight. My first goal was to find a standard piston that might work, then begin to look for an aluminum version. I figured there are enough JD's out there that use this size piston that if I could find a potential solution, that someone might make an aluminum version as there are so many pullers looking for that hardware. My primary goal is to avoid having custom pistons made. Therefore, any additional information you can provide will be deeply appreciated. One other thought, if I have to use heavy long skirted pistons, we'll lighten them up on the mill and end up taking quite a bit of the skirt off and moving the oil ring above the wrist pin. But, only as a last resort. Money is a driving factor in this workup.

Thanks for all your help.

There is a 5.5 Aircraft pistons they are using in the B powerblocks.. They are light, and have a high pin location... Look for WTW (Dave W) email address on this site.. he has built a lot of B's with these pistons.... After think for a few mins.. the pistons I was orginally thinking of, you could not cut down because of the high ring location.. and the 619 pistons are only 5.12in...

Allison motors are 5.5. About any of the mod guys that run allisons have buckets full of them cause they run a custom piston instead for compression issues. Few years back the Bollinger bros Taylorville IL priced them to me for $50 ea I think.

Excellent idea... by chance, do you have contact info for anyone with these pistons laying around?

Thanks again.

I'm just looking for a 5.5" piston that's relatively inexpensive. They're going into a 22-36 McCormick Deering with LA Sleeves. I've got room to go almost to 6" but not quite and know there are numerous 5.5" pistons on the market. So, I was looking for something that was readily available, with a fairly large wrist pin that I can turn a bushing for, with a high deck that I can work with. I was just looking to see what's out there then will work it on the lathe and mill to generate what I really need. Rings are no problem. I was just trying to find something I could work with so I didn't have to have custom pistons made. Really just looking to save a few bucks.

Besides the Allison the 903 cummins is nice and short with a large pin but I think they are 5.450 to late if u already got your sleeves. Maybe check at local implement dealers junk pile.
