I am installing electronic ignition on an John Deere A and I was wondering if it needs a ballast resistor? The coil has 45,000 volts.

You should read the directions first to avoid burning out the Ignitor. You MUST check primary resistance. Should be a minimum of 1.5 ohms for six & 8 cyl. engines. Four & two cyl. engines require a minimum of 3.0 ohms of resistance.
The ignitor is compatable only with point style coil or triggering a MSD system. Hope this helps.

the resistor is to cut the primary voltage. if you have a 6 volt coil and a 12 volt system you need a resister. if you have a 12 volt coil you don't need a resister.

LOL Yeah I should. I don't know it all though. have been right have been wrong. But if it would work, a 50 dollar module could replace a 150-250 MSD, All I was looking for is to see if you could use points to trigger the ford ingition box. Chad

MSD means multipal spark discharge. It gives 5 or 6 sparks instead of one up to 3000 rpm. Taylor- made for tractor pulling.

A shade tree decision would be to feel the coil after it has ran a little while. If it getting hot then you might run the risk of shorting the coil out during a good pull. Other wise if stays cool keep the 45k volts going. As I understand it the ignitor does not take direct voltage to the coil. Be it on the ground side or not. The ignitor is a low current control that tells something else (msd box or other brand) when to open the circuit which causes the coil field to calapse and discharge creating the spark. Its my opinion that the pickup (ignitor module) that the reluctor passes causing the signal is totally isolated form the coil in an MSD aplication or Peritronix. FWIW which isn't much whin its my opinion.

If you don't use a ballast resistor, be EXTRA CAREFULL to never leave the ignition switch "ON" with the engine NOT running.

The coil and the Ignitor may drastically heat up under those conditions.

I've got two pullers with the Ignitor ignitions and no resisters, they both work great, one has had it on for at least 6yrs. and no problem.
