I've heard the 3-71 in the olivers and masseys, and I've heard 353 and 453 in log skidders, but I was wondering what Detroit sounds the biggest and baddest?. Actually, whats the best sounding engine you've ever heard?.
Looking for opinions here,
Jonathan

Rob, That picture was taken in Aug 1970 at the 1st ever Ozark Empire Fair tractor pull in Springfield,MO.I was driving and the old 1950 made the only full pull in the 15,000 lb class to win $100 and a trophy.

We drove the tractor 100 miles down there, spent the night, and when the pull was over late the next afternoon we drove it 100 miles back home.It ran 25 mph so it took 4 hours. The entire town of Walnut Grove,MO was standing in their yards listening to the 1950 as we drove it home.

1206swmo,

You are what we call a "Die Hard puller" Up here in Union, we wouldn't dream of going that far on a tractor just to pull. Hope you still got the tractor and many more full pulls to you.

I agree with you Dave, ain't nuthin like sound of an Allison with the ears pinned back on it.There is a Super 99 Oliver Detroit that pulls at Lawrenceburg TN that sounds off and looks just as well.I have heard them ole Detroits in log skidders that absolutly sounded like they were gonna wind apart but keep goin all day.I guess the most annoying noisy ones I have heard was an old International cabover with a 318 Detroit with straights on it.Wasn't bad at first but I was in it all day hauling corn up and down hills.

I like the sound of our 4-53 GM in the 1950. She really screams! However I think my favorite sound is a turbo charged screamin 354 Perkins. We pull an 1850 Oliver with a 354 running around 4000RPM. I love the sound of it at any RPM!

Our old 1966 Oliver 1950 with the little 4-53 Detroit was hard to beat for noise. That little 4 valve head 4-53 turning over 3000 rpms with big injectors and a straight pipe could be heard for up to 12 miles under the right conditions. We always drove it to the tractor pulls because it was so much fun to road it.

We used to pull an Oliver 6x16 plow and friends that lived in Walker,MO 7 miles to the north said that after dark they could hear it like it was at the edge of town.

We also had an HD-10 AC Dozer with a 2 valve head 4-71 Detroit and even with a straight pipe it was quite compared to the 1950 Olivers 4-53.A 4 valve head Detroit will be lots louder than a 2 valve head one.

I live 3 miles east of Hiway 71 in SW Missouri and back in the 70's some truckers ran straight pipes on their 318 Detroit powered semis and they sounded sure great pulling the railroad overpass on 71.There isnt hardly a 318 running in this area anymore.

In the 1970's a neighbor 4 miles east of us had a cab over Chevy 10 wheeler powered by a V6-53 Detroit.I could hear him leave the house with 600 bushels on and could hear it all the way to the grain elevator at Milo,MO which is 5 miles SW of us.It was really screamin when it came by our farm.

nice pictures. There was an Oliver 1950T that sold near me this summer but it had a six cylinder walkeshaw(sp) engine, I'm guessing a 453 equipped one is kinda rare. That tractor must do pretty good in the pulls??. Does your tractors have straight gears, over under, or hydro drive?, the one that sold this summer had stright gears, it was an awful solid old tractor, but I figgured it wouldn't do so well in the pulls with straight gears.

Johnathan, Oliver 1950's with the 4-53 Detroit were built from 1964-67 and I know of several in my area.It sure is hard to find one for sale.

Oliver 1950-T's with the 310 Waukesha were built from 1967-69 and are pretty scarce in my area.In fact I dont know of a single one around here.

Both the 1950 Olivers we have owned had the Hydra-Power 2 speed in them.Thats a must to pull one.

Lynn, At age 54 I still pass my plants hearing test every year.People that know me say that I should be stone deaf as much as we ran that Oliver and other tractors with straight pipes.

I still havent learned my lesson as heres what I drilled wheat with last fall. Its my 1967 Oliver 1950 thats bone stock.Theres nothing sweeter sounding than a Detroit.

I have a buddy who drives truck. He won't buy anything but Petes with Detroits. No other truck sounds like them, especially with straights. Only diesel that can turn stacks blue. Very few trucks can keep up with them either.

Grandpa runs a 8-71 in his GMC with no turbo. With turbo pipes (less baffles), you can hear it climbing the grade in to town about 2-3 miles away. Very unique sound. A old CAT D7 with the big 4cyl really rumbles and sounds like a Moline G on steroids. 5-3/4x8 bore and stroke. My personal favorite is a big old 800 MM six cyl. Also a 206V4 used in MM combines sounds very very odd. The best engine I've heard is a Sachs 303cc Rotary motor in my Arctic Cat snomobile. When it is at idle and only at idle, it sounds like a JD 2 cyl with it's put-put-put.

I always like the 71 series detroits compared to the 53 series just because of the differences in the super chargers. My favorite detroit would have to be a 6-71 (straight piped of course), never liked the 6v-71 way to raspy the 8v's and 12v's have a nice deep tone about them. As far as my personal favorite I have always had a soft spot for a straight piped 404t with a after cooler.
