M Head Gasket

I am running a 4.375" bore in my Farmll M. I recently blew a head gasket. The shop that built my engine didn't use the correct gasket. The bores in the gasket were too small for my cylinder bores whick allowed the fire ring to hang over the edge of the cylinder walls. The pistons were hitting the edge of the fire rings every time they came to the top, causing the fire rings not to seal. What kind of head gaskets are you guys running in your big bore M's? Do copper head gaskets really seal as good as people say? Where can I get a custom gasket made? I need something that will seal at least 250 lbs of compression. Thank you guys.

I agree with the other response but wanted to comment about the copper gasket. I make my own copper gaskets out of .032 sheet copper. It takes a few hours but isn't too bad. But, it is absolutely crucial to o-ring the head and/or the block to get it to seal (same approach used on many blower motors). I also anneal the copper in an oven at 450 deg. for 30 minutes to soften and also spray the gasket with copper sealer. Good luck.

I have built many 4.375 bore M's. First off you need to fill in the deck counter bore. I make steel rings for this task. Leave the rings stick up about .005. above the deck. Use a stock 281-450 head gasket. The gasket MUST have steel on each side of it to work. The gasket can be found at a Case IH dealer or Victor Reinz. They are the ONLY gasket that you can buy over the counter that will work. I also paint the head gasket with high temp aluminum paint to stop sepage. A copper gasket will also work, but the head & block should be 'O' ringed for best results. Hope this helps.
