Lighter Farmall M wheels

I have an M Farmall with cast rear centers with the big open holes in them. Would I save enough weight to justify the expense of going to 9 bolt hubs and pressed centers. Anything have 9 bolt hubs for a 2 3/4 axle with 2 .5" keyways that isnt hard to find? I dont want weldons as I may need to remove em some day. Guess I could always make my own just didnt want to spend the effort and money to only save 50 pounds unless i have to.

Also, is there a 5 or 6 lug trailer hub that is easy to addapt to the front spindles on an M? Could loose a little there with a lighter rim and hub.

You can lose a little weight by using 460 front end . It will fit and uses lighter wheels but won't gain you a whole lot.

We lost 40 to 50 pulnds changin from the M frontend to the 460

Pressed steel is good for 500+ pounds. Not sure the exact weight difference, but you can drop at least one class. On a mildly stripped M, it'll get you to 4500#.
Hubs are getting hard to come by. Massey hubs will work, but the key ways aren't exactally the same so you have to watch them. International had hubs and also M&W. M&W hubs are a little lighter, but very hard to find.

Thanks, I sure didnt think those cast centers were anywhere near 250 lbs. They don't look like there is that much casting there. Someday when i have nothing to do and want to get really aggrivated I will pull off a wheel and a casting and then I will know if it is worth while. I know the 9 bolt pressed center would be around 25 lbs and the hub close to that so if the casting really is that heavy I could see loosing a couple hundred pounds a side or at least total. Trying to get the tractor to 4500 with a roll cage. Need to get rid of 200lbs from somewhere to offset the weight of the cage. Think I could just pull it remote control? That would get rid of my 200+!

One other thing I forgot. Drain the rear end down to the bottom of the PTO flange. That is still enough to keep everything lube up, but drops the excess weight.

Why the cage?
I'm assuming you've pulled off all the usual stuff, (belly pump, PTO, etc.) You could also build a front end and lose 150-200# easy. The front end we build for one M used import FWD rear hubs. It was light enough to carry in one hand. As opposed to the original that took two men & a boy to lift.
If you go to weld on hubs & cut the axles off, that will gain you about 70# each.
After that it's go to aluminum. Not much else you can do for big weight loses. Hard to get an M past about 4400# without major work.

The cage is because the M has a V8 in it. Everything is off the tractor that will come off. Only thing left is to remove the rear wheels and go pressed. Just didnt look like they were heavy enough to make much difference. I will take one off and weigh it.

You will be surprised at the weight of the cast centers. I went through the same process as you years ago.... went from cast centers to 9 bolt cast hubs, then ultimately to weld on hubs then to aluminum rims. I will look through my notes tonight as I kept track of the improvements along the way. Ultimately, I was able to get under 4000lbs but quite a bit of aluminum and light front end. If you're interested, I have a set of bolt on hubs with the 9 hole pattern I would consider selling. Good luck!
