The NATPA is trying to be safer by now allowing turnbuckles to be attached above the axel, but they need to start paying attention to the chicken scratch welding on the hitches. Some of them looked like they were JB welded together, and it is a matter of time before one of those aluminum hitches gives up!! they need to elect a weld inspector!!

The problem with a weld inspecter would be if you approved a weld on a hitch and it broke they could come back on you, the inspecter and or the club you represent. The problem is not limited to NATPA but all antique pulling clubs. I've seen some very crude welding & poorly designed hitches, wheelie bars & weight brackets. I've also seen some very good welds, designs, etc. where do you draw the line? Put a jack on the hitch (pulling back) to see if it will hold? Just my 3 cents worth

What kind of force does a jack put on a hitch compared to the actual force that it indures? It isn't hard to tell if a hitch is more likely to break than others. I just think that the NATPA and other clubs included are overlooking the most obvious and most dangerous problems.
