third party image

I took this picture in Sept 1969 at the M&W Farm Show and Pull held at LaPlata,MO.Pictured is 17 year old Randy Vallee from Illinois pulling his late Dads 318 Detroit powered 4020 JD in the 15,000 Open class.

There were 20 tractors in the class and this 4020 came in 2nd place between the Allison Teams MM's powered by V-12 Allisons.4th was another 318 Detroit powered 4020 JD.5th was ND Harrison from Ill on the 1st ever twin turbo puller,a 220 Allis. This was an invitational only pull so the best in the U.S. was there.

Solid Junk pulled at the very first tractor pull here in Ontario (1971 International Plowing Match}. Marshall Meyers was also there with his International. Man , what a show !!! Everytime those Allisons ran, it put a tear in my uncle's eye as he was a aircraft mechanic in WW2. By the way, new Allisons in the factory crates were offered for $5000 at that time!

I work at Allison Engines now (Rolls Royce PLC). I have seen some of the stuff for these engines get throwed away by the hoppers full. Blocks, cranks, and complete pistons sets. It made me cry. They wouldn't sell them. God knows I tried to buy them. Could have made alot of people happy with those pieces. Brings a tear to my eyes thinking about it. Donnie

1206SWMO, I was at that pull with my family. It was quite a show. I remember seeing an exhibit of a 24.5-32 tire and thinking it was the biggest thing I had ever seen! We were trying to remember a while back what particular year it was. We were there to look around and to watch our cousins pull there. You could hardly see anything on the track for the people. Dad and I ended up standing on the front rack of someone's truck, I think. Dad said to stand on it and not the roof so it wouldn't cave in the top of the roof. Just then some idiot jumped up right between us and did just that, making a severe dent in the roof of the cab. If looks could kill, a look from my dad to this idiot would have dropped him in his tracks! Mike

Puller, To the best of my memory the UB had the stock tranny and rearend, even had the stock seat on it.Looked just like MM had put the V-12 Allison in at the factory. They had to lock it in gear. These Allisons were bone stock putting out around 1000-1200 horses.Thats alot of hp and weight for a stock UB tranny and rear.

I posted a picture of the G-1000 above along with their UB.Click on the link at my new topic to see the UB.

Mike, Lee Aylward pulled his 856 IH in the 15,000 Open at LaPlata and according to my record book broke at 230'5".By the way how old is Lee now?Stanley Bull from Memphis,MO came in 10th in this class on his 1256 IH at 307'1".

Phil Aylward pulled a 856 IH in the 12,000 class and came in 10th out of 30 at 317'2'.They ran a 500 ft track so there were no full pulls. The longest distance at the entire pull was the Allison Teams UB MM at 442'10" to win the 15,000 Open. There was a sea of humanity at this pull and we got to the track early all 3 days to get down close.I was 20 then and me,my brother, and a good friend drove up in Dads 67 Ford Ranger pickup and slept in a camper shell.I will remember this great farm show and pull for the rest of my life.I remember one day some of the MM guys were using a U-302 MM with a loader way up in the air so they could see the pull and somehow the bucket got tripped and dumped them out.No one got hurt too bad.

Russell Miner from Pleasant Plains,ILL won the 5000 class on a 1951 Wards ER.In 1970 I bought that tractor from him and pulled it for years finally trading it back to him in 1983.

I believe Lee is in his upper 80's now. I don't get to see him as often as I used to. He actually took up pulling later in life. His son Phil and twin sons Ed and Earl were the pullers, going back as far as a John Deere "R". Lee got the tractors going and the boys pulled them. Stanley Bull is still around although not in good health, so I hear. Phil is still going great guns. My dad once hooked drawbar to drawbar to Phil's 70 diesel tractor in the mid-50's with a factory 520 and with both weighted up to 11,000 lbs. Dad started pulling Phil and dug a hole in the alley behind the John Deere dealership. Phil said he would then pull Dad back up the alley. He never moved my dad at all. And Phil's tractor had duals on it (by the way, his tractor was the reason that duals were later outlawed, so I have been told). The little 520 went on to get a third place at the tractor pull in that heavy class, and spun out. It was the smallest tractor in the class. One fellow had a new 560 and went to turn the sled around to go the other direction. He couldn't budge it as it was loaded for the heavy class. Dad then backed up to it with the 520 and moved it around as slick as you please..:-) The neighbor was not amused..:-) I got to go with Lee and Dad to a few pulls but not as many as I now would have liked to. But they were fun. Lee used to loan weights to his toughest competitors but when it was pulling time it was all business..:-) But most pullers are like that, it seems. One thing I remember most about the show at La Plata was the bathroom facilities. It was an open tent and not anymore than concealed. Not a pleasant memory there! Mike
