John Deere 60 rods in a 70

I was told I could use 60 rods in a 70 gas. Is there any thing else but offset grind the crank to the 60 rod size? Are the big ends of the rods the same width? also how much more stroke will I have? Thanks, Mike

There was a similar question about a week ago both here and on the John deere board, and someone gave the specs for both. If I remember correctly the center to center length is the same, and the width of the 60 rod is narrower on the big end. Wrist pin is the same diameter. If you have the crank offset ground you will gain 3/8" stroke. Just have the width of the newly ground journel sized for the 60 rod. Mike

Don,t know much about jd,s. The gain in stroke will be two times the amount that you offset the grind.

'stroke' is the distance the piston moves from TDC to BDC. If you offset grind the crank 3/16" you will increase stroke 3/8"

You need to remember one thing on offset grinding.You are working off the center of
the crank rod journal. Therefore if you offset grind 3/16" your center of journal has only moved 3/32". So 3/32 x 2 = 3/16 more stroke. I know it sounds confusing, but just remember to figure off the center of the journal. Hope this helps

i used to think the same, but if lets say .100 is ground off the bottom of the journal in an eliptical shape (offset grind) the centerline of the journal only mooves .050 stroke is increased .100. Your means of thinking are correct that the piston will moove higher and lower, but only half the amount of offset grind each way because the axis of the crankpin only mooves half of the grind

well,yes i have. "what we have here is a failure to communicate". 'offset' is the amount the center line of the crank throw is moved. if the crank throw is 3.500 this a stroke of 7.000. if you 'offset grind' the throw 0.1875 (3/16) that means you remove 3/8 from the heel (back) of the throw & no material from the top. if the crank journal was 3 3/8 (3.375) dia it will now be reduced to 3.000 dia. Your 3.500 throw crankshaft now has a throw of (3.500 plus .1875) 3.6875 with a stroke of 7.375
