Ive always wanted to build a MM ub but every time i see one pull it seems like the driver has to strap the shifter to keep it in gear. Ive seen other tractors jump out of gear but it seem the Molines have a real bad problem with it .WHY? And is it possible to keep it from doing this?

We have a UB that we have been pulling for almost 25 years with different engine setups over those years ranging from a nearly stock G engine at 3000 rpm to the current stroked 150 hp engine. The only time it has ever jumped out of gear was after it had just broke a hub. That was in first gear. Even with a splitter gear in now where 1st was, it still has never jump out. Also have a GB with a huge stroker engine that has never jumped out, but it has never pulled in 1st gear (it's mainly in fourth).

we got several hp out of our ub and ours never has popped out of 1st,2nd or 3rd. but years ago we farmed with same tractor and i remember it popping out twice in first. i always thought it would be due to a worn shifter linkage. i probably will make something to hold it in gear because i would think that would give a fellow a pretty good jolt.

Well we have a UB that makes around 115hp and pulls 1,2,3 rd gear and stays in just fine and have a G that makes 190to200 that will come out in 3-4 gear but detents and bearing condition wear are all factors, and most of all over powering, remember these gears have straight cut teeth.

I was told it was from the transmission shaft flexing from the torque. You gotta remember they were not made for 150+ HP. Bungy cords are cheap.

I believe that its either 1st or 2nd gear that they ALWAYS will jump out of in a pull in most molines. I have seen some that have only 90hp that it still jumps out of..all ya gotta do is make a latch somehow. alot of people make an aluminum latch that they put it in gear and then put a pin in it to keep it from unlatching. I dont' know why this is..but I don't think it's curable.....

I've seen them in the 65-70 hp range and they wouldn't stay in gear. Virtually everyone I see now has some kind of latch or at least a bungy cord on it.

Well, my U has more than that, and in close to 300 trips down the track since I've bought it, it's never jumped out of any gear I've pulled it in, 1-4. 5500-8500 lbs. Not to say it won't happen, but it hasn't yet.

My guess is that a lot of them have more to do with worn shifter linkage than tranny problems. Might be wrong, just a guess.

WEll mine is a stock U and it didn't jummp out of ear but it sure did die from lack of gas. hehe I was running jest a little too lean I think as it started right back up after it sat for a few seconds :) I did have a John Deere G jump out on me once though. Was on someone elses tractor and the front end had just come up and BAM! it jumped out of gear hit hard and I thought I had broken it. Nothing broken and a litle bit of embarrasmentand things were find again .

That G never jumped out till I put that big rubber on it.Made me a rod out of a grease gun shaft and never had that problem since.Heck of a jolt ain't it?

Mine does it at about 65hp. I think afer having the trans completely apart the problem stems from wear in the top of the sifter rails. They have small indents cut into them. There is a spring loaded ball that presses into the indent for whatever gear. I believe a combo of an aged spring with a worn or rounded edge to the indent allows the stress on the gearing to force it out of gear.

Just My Humble Opinionated Guess
