Not trying to get off the tractor pulling topic but I was wondering if anyone hauls their tractors with Dodges 1 ton V-10. I found one for a heck of a deal and am just wondering if anyone has had any problems with them. Thanks

I am a diesel man, but own a v-10. If you can get over the "sissy" sound (even with headers and good exhast) they will pull a brick s#$%t house, and push a wooden one. We get around 10mpg empty and 8-9 pulling. We havent had any problems with drive train or moter whatsoever. The viper chip is a great $300 investment for it also, and definately work with the air. I will still buy another diesel, but will not trade or sell the dodge v-10. The first year we had it, the girlfriend wanted to pull it in our county fair, and to my dismay, beat every diesel there. (dodges, fords and chevys)

I bought a v-10 this summer to pull the trailer. Traded the diesel to get it because the diesel didn't have the b@lls. I don't regret buying it at all. Always remember: Gas mileage is for pussies.

My Dad has one; lots of power but I don't think it's ever gotten out of single didgets for mileage.

Don't be afraid of one of these, ours is a '94 with lotsa miles on it(6 digits), pulled the wagon all but about 5000 of those with net loads of 4000# to 18000#, never been back to the shop other than recalls. Best mileage is without wagon and foot not in it,14.6, worst at 8.5 with load 8500# and cruise set at 75 and at that load we'll challenge ANY diesel pickup.

Nothing Wrong with a V-10, our 3/4 on pulls trailer non stop, 170,000 miles, motor never touched, empty runs constant 15 miles to gallon, hauling can average 10-11 with two tractors and 30 foot dually gooseneck, total towing weight of 18000 lbs, out run the diesels to boot, without a power chip, don't need to cheat when you got spark power. Hook a new hemi to a trailer load for its life, see how long it lasts!

I dout if you guy's are smart enough to figure gas mileage. The v10's in our area are gas hogs real bad. They like to spark knock and burn pistons. What a piece. It's a desenceatized viper motor that is a slug. If you dont believe me check out a new diesel from ford, chevy or dodge. 325 hp and 600 ft torque. No gasser stock will do that. Do the math! And as far as lower mileage makes you more manly? You are just eather filthy rich or doumb, you decide.

The crack about mileage being for pussies was a joke that a friend of mine always used when I ribbed hime about the mileage of his 460. I do agree with you that the newer diesels have a lot of power, but for my money I could not afford one that new. However, I really like the power and pulling my H and Ohio M Puller's M on the trailer get me around 9 mpg.

Have you ever driven a newer diesel with a chip in it? I could make you eat you words and still double your mileage. PS you started it! If the v10 is sew great, why did dodge drop them?

My concern was not about gas mileage. We had a Ford with a 460 and it got about 5mpg no matter what. I dont want a loud, dirty diesel! I dont care if they have 450 horse. A couple of my friends are pushing around 450 out of their dodges thats not what I want to do. I just want somthing that will do a decent job to get my tractors up the road and back. Dont want diesel all over my trailer and dont want to mess with pluging them in when its could outside.

Thanks for the decent reply. The v10's that My friends have ,they tell me that empty babying it and not going over 60, can get up to 15 mpg empty.
Loaded, like say 20,000 lbs. trailer wt. on flat land 5-8. If you push them you don't want to know their mileage.

I bought my V-10 with 410 gears new in 1994. I think the diesel option was around $5000,I figured I could buy a lot of gas for the difference, and at that time the diesel's weren't that strong. The truck has been great, 92000 miles and still running good.
Gas milage is around 10-11 around home,12-13 on the road and around 7-8 pulling a load.I brought an 1850 diesel home from Texas to Indiana with no problems at all,If you really get after it it ain't going to pull down. But with the horse power the new diesel's are getting, it would be hard to beat them, when I do decide to replace the old truck I'll go with the high output, they do get good mileage(almost twice as good as the V-10)
and they very strong.
I hope this help's. H

Cummins must have had a weak period that I didn't know about when you mentioned that the diesels weren't that strong. We have a '90 Dodge 3/4 ton and we did all of our pulling with it until we got a '98. We always seemed to have enough power. They are both real good trucks. Neither one of the engines or transmissions have been touched. Both have 6 digit miles on them as as well. As far as power we seem to have all we need with either truck. I guess I'm a diesel guy.

Im sorry I guess I said that wrong,in 94 the diesel's were rated a little lower in horsepower than the V-10.
