What can I do to get better performance from my puller? I've bored and stroked,put bigger valves in,had the cam worked, and are using the big nut G carb.The tractor is a '38 and getting about 65HP Pulling in the 4500 to 6500 lb classes. The problem seems to be no lugging power.When the RPMs start going down it dies. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Gene

As per past discussion with Burns , if that A has a true 13 to 1 compression ratio that maybe contributing to loss on low end. Spark timing, fuel metering & coolant/combustion chamber temps can be making detonation happen. Or perhaps these variables need to be tweaked some at low rpm. The high comp makes more power at the price of making them foul tempered & tough to tune. A 6 to 1 engine running "on the money" will out pull a 13 to 1 that has problems.

G Taylor,How do I reduce the compression now is the question? The previous owner told me the comp and I don't have a way of checking it so just took his word for it. The other question would be how do I tweak this engine for low rpms? Thanks for your help.

After measuring the engine & calculating the comp ratio. If the ratio is excessive or if there is a piston dome impeding the flame front. The pistons will need to be cut down on a lath or mill. Low end RPM power needs to be set on a dyno with the engine lugged down.Tweak the mixture & timing for max snort. Is the ignition a distributor or mag. A mag has only two timing settings. Retarded for start & advanced for all other running conditions. A properly curved centrifugal advance can follow the engines needs.

Where I come from, all the antique pullers
have to be stock. Thats what makes pulling
fun. That way it's not the guy with the most
money wins.Put it back to stock and your problem
will be over.

Boring and stroking will increase low end pulling power ( torque), but the bigger carb and longer duration cam will not. More compression will help offset the effect of long duration cams, but you may allready have enough compression. Your cranking compression should be somewhat more than stock. If it isn't your long cam is hurting your low end torque. Remember, anything you do to increase air volume generally moves your torque curve higher in the RPM range.

Hey, im fixing up an A and any help would be good to. a guy told me that to get more lug put a really good electrical ignition in it, a guy who pulled a A put one off a Z28 and had it spark 5 times a fire. carried the spark farther and he said that was what made his pulling tractor

What AJDPULLER was talking about was a MSD ignition box, not a stock GM ignition system off of a Z-28. I'm very satisfied with the MSD's addition to the tractor's performance.

gene; i had same problem. thought i had a camshaft problem. i pulled throttle stop out an manually overrided governor. what a difference. pulled governor off. it had the wrong weights in it. later richard

Gene what kind of cam profile did you have ground? What kind of compression are you running? To long of duration combined with a higher compression engine will cause a fall in intake air velocity. It sounds like your cam works well with a higher rpm but falls flat on its face on the lower rpm.

burns, I sent the cam out and told the shop what the trac was doing and they worked it. It did do better than before but still does not have the power at low RPMs that I wanted.The compression I think is 13 to 1 or there abouts. Do you have a suggestion to a shop that you would recommend? Thanks Gene

Compression being that high is probably some of your problem, but probably not all of it. I have a 537ci G set up about 11:1 compression and it lugs great, cam is stock though. I pull against a 480ci A and I think it's set up at a little less compression than mine, lugs great too. I also think he has a stock cam.
