I have a john deere A with a long stroke and a brand new power block that is not bored with custom pistons. It has alot of blow by, but it also has not ran very long since put together, so maybe the ring are not set. How long does it take for the rings to set? I am wondering if this the nature of these big cube John Deeres with power blocks and the smoking wiil quite? I have been told that power block smoke more than regular blocks, but it is alot of smoke.

If it hasn't been run much, it's likely that the rings aren't properly seated yet. That needs to happen, because if you just tool around on it and don't really work it hard, the cylinders will glaze and you WON'T get the rings seated. This is a very common issue with rebuilt engines nowdays, because the new oils are getting so efficient at preventing wear, that you don't get the initial "wear" that is crucial to a good ring seal, particularly if the tractor isn't worked hard. The answer? John Deere break-in oil and a good hard workout on the dyno. And yes, a larger than stock-displacement engine will have more blowby than a stock one, all other things being equal, because of it's greater displacement. More cylinder volume with the same percentage of leakage past the rings is going to result in more blow-by volume.

You said this is a brand new power block for your A. Is it Brand New including new pistons or rebuilt? As I was told they quit making them years ago. And if it is Brand New would you mind telling me where you purchased it and approximate cost? Thanks Old Joe

It is a new power block that was never put on a tractor from when tsc made them years ago. A guy had it and never used and hoping to put it on a pulling tractor. He never did and sold it to me for $1500. I thought it was a good deal.

I have been told, and also seen that the big stroke 2 cylinders will smoke more than the stock stroke ones. This is fairly common, and one of the joys of having the big Cubes.

I am guessing that the cylinders are out of round. What is the stroke on this tractor? let me know and I could tell you how long it should take for the rings to seat. I need a rounda bout if compression too...
