I have replaced several head gaskets on a IH 650 diesel.Could I set the head gasket in a thin bed of epoxy like benzola? It is #3 cyl that leaks compression to the water jacket.I would use a relese agent on the block and studs.thanks

greetings, i have a wd9 that i have bored the block to accept sleeves and 4 5/8 pistons. it has been a few years, the head was machined flat, used coppercoat on both sides of gasket which i've used succesfully for a long time on all head gaskets. this fall started leaking coolant on left side between cylinder 2 and 3 when under heavy load like near the end of a full pull. by the time i get off the track and back to the trailer it stops. local napa store priced a head gasket set to me within a dollar or two of the ih store. napa's book had a comment about 4.4'' bore to 4.5'' conversion's. need to study that more before i decide which to buy. don't remember the brand of gasket that is on it now, seems like it was a federal mogul package. if your block has some metal eroded away a patch will be necessary. i used some hightemp epoxy from napa on a 175 massey that had blown the gasket between cylinders and damaged block about 3/32 deep. the tractor baled hay all summer. good luck, mike

I had this problem with a john deere gas burner that I Knew had a little too much compression for its own good. When I was about to give up a neighbor came by and seen what I was doing and told me about a trick he used. He told me to put a very thin coat of grease, any grease on both sides of head gasket, just enough that you could say you had some on it and put it together like normal. He said the grease lets the gasket go where it needs to when being torqued down. Sounded crazy to me but the only alternative I had was to scrap my project. I did it and it worked like a top without any problems. I don't know what this would do on a diesel with its very high compression. You are working on a relatively low compression diesel 560. Who Knows it might work.

The block deck may be warped at that spot,, If memory serves me right,, the sleeves go up past the block and the head sets over the sleeves. Ifyou have not tried using a sealer on the gasket,, try Permatex copper coat spray on the gasket,, or,,, Edlebrock "Gaskacinch" it is a brush on sealer,, works well too. You may need to resurface the head,, have it checked for warpage,, may have a spot that is about .010 due to the compression leak,, Is the engine bored out close to the water port? You could also get a copper gasket made,, might seal it up,, but I would do your home work on the head and block,, and try using a good sealer and plenty of it. Hope this helps,, Just my 2 cents,, ChadS

I tried coppercoat and different heads. These are the 4 5/8 p&s's, very expensive and hard to find so I do not want to pull the thin wall sleeves as they get damaged very easy. I think there is some metal erosion near #3 sleeve. Athanks for any help

OK,, After welding the sleeves in the H engine, and resurfaced the head,, I had a few pits left over around the top of the sleeve. It was not deep, just has a few spots that was questionable in my eyes. I got some JB weld, and filled in the pits around the edges of the sleeves, let it cure and then filed it back off until they were gone. From what I understand,, as long as the JB weld is not directly in the hot spot,, it will hold the pressure. I had the same problem you have stated,, Even though there is a difference in the block decks,, you should be able to JB it. Don't know if that will help you,, worked for me,, CHadS
