We are in the process of getting our 88 ready for next summer, I see that some guys have 88's down to 3500, would anyone be kind enough to give me some ideas how they're doing this? thanks.

I have an idea... Why don't you keep your tractor in the weight classes it was intended for. Do you enjoy winning classes where you are the only competition or would you rather brag about beating 30 or 40 competitive tractors? So suck it up, be a man, build it stong and bring it on.

I tend to agree with you on this idea, but while we are at it make sure the M's and 460/560's don't go below the 4500# class. Make sure the 460/560's have to run rpm's based on the 460/560 not the 660. If you want to run rpm's based on the 660 you should use the 660 rea and transmission and not be allowed in classes under say 6000#. Plus we make sure the GVI and Massey 95's are not allowed in clsses below 6500 or 7000. Also, allow the Oliver 66 into the 3250 class. Unfortunately the rules say differently with some groups.

My $.02,
A.P.

Been thinking, We all know about the old rules how it used to be,, here is a thought,, using the same old rules from yesteryear with the tractor restriction in certain weight classes,, Only allow those stated, that are allowed to pull in those classes, Like 3500, only 4 cyl engined tractors. no 6 cyl tractors below 4000. keep the 77 and like size tractors,, in 4000, M's, 44 massey, DC case, ol88, above 4500. Don't allow aluminum in any class, as far as engine and frame mounts, tranny plates, etc, Keep em steel, Just a thought,, ChadS

Going down to #3500 can be done,But HP verse weight can be a killer.Anyone can Spinout. One place to save weight is to change the seat set-up,make a lightweight seat bracket, also adding spray foam to displace gear lube that just sits there. Gear lube weights alot per gallon.Good luck.

Some have spent a small fortune getting light.

Locate an aluminum shifter cover. Look at your hitch and wheely bars to see what is overkill on thickness and weight. Remove fenders and cut off the fender mounts. Replace brakes with disk brakes. You will have to use your imigination there. Use light seat mount. Get rid of the original oil filter setup and use aftermarket filter adapter and hoses (also helps in cooling).
Use less rearend grease. Take some weight off the bull gears. Use smaller front end then modify it with lightweight hubs and spindles to connect to lightweight wheels and tires. Aluminum weight brackets and aluminum everywhere else that it will replace anything. Drink a gallon of "Go Lightly" 6 hours before each pull. :)

first make sure most places will allow an 88 under surtain weight classes. then make sure you don't get so light you do not have any moveable weight at least 200lb.

Anything that you don't need goes. Anything that you do need and can replace with a light weight part you do. Cut off the rear axles, use weld on hubs, aluminum wheels and light weight tires, plastic fuel cell or aluminum fuel tank, automotive flywheel and pressure plate, lightweight or no radiator, tubing or aluminum steering shafts, Rear axle housings from a "standard". Gear reduction starter, automotive bellhousing, etc. Machine anything off you don't need. Use the early (Fleetline) front frame. Convert to the earlier band brake setup or go to hydraulic disc brakes. Give up the gears in the transmission that you don't need.

On the personal front, don't forget to diet.
