I have just finished rebuilding by 52 G. I have done some mods on it like 2.0 ratio rocker arms, 9.2:1 compression, cam grind,cold air intake, carb mod by Roberts carb. It runs great idling or full throtle but when I put it on the dyno to brake it in, it runs for a minute then sputters and dies.I have replaced the coil and dist. twice plugs are new and wires are new. When you open it up it doesn't open up smoothly. Its like it is hitting on 1&1/2 instead of 2. It smooths out once up to rpm. My question is would to low of oct fuel do anything strange like that? The tractor doesn't seem to knock when you play with the timing. Any ideas? Thank you in advance.Jon

I also had a JD-A with a Big Nut JD-G carb that did the spitting and sputtering, and it turned out that it was getting to much much fuel, I leaned it down some and it smoothed out also. The same tractor did the same thing when it wasn't getting enough fuel also. If you've had the carb modified, you may be getting to much fuel. Try leaning it down some and see if it smoothes out.

Had one that acted like that. Sounds too simple, but it wasn't getting enough gas to carb. A bigger fuel line, fittings and aftermarket fuel filter solved it.
