I recomend a good 930 chain drive CASE and there is no need for a moline. With there bad rear ends and crude engines.

GVI baby! 930 is nice. I found a 900 LP in a junk yard that is decent yet. Case and MM were one other manufacturer that believed bigger and slower lasted longer and was much tougher than little high reving sissy motors.

I am the kind of tractor guy that likes about all makes. Moline's had good tractors, as in for lugging power due to there long stroked motors, but that doesn't mean that all other tractors were junk. A lot of Minnie Mo's have gone to the junk yard just like the rest of the remaining makes. One thing is funny though about that, why is it that Case IH, and John Deere are still in the business?? What kept them ahead was good tractors, implements, service, and most of all, managers of the company. As for Minnie Mo, you have to buy parts through a White dealer, or a Massy dealer if you can find one. Agco Allis is even in the game yet.

I can still see JD dealer but if you consider Case New Holland to be an IH then an agco is still a MM.

Yeah, I can see what your saying. IH sold out to case, but there name is still found through parts, and even some of the newer tractors. The new McCormick series was built to "remember" the McCormick age. Minnie Mo, all you do is get parts from them. White bought out Moline, and Oliver, but as you can see, White didn't last very long either.

Yep, the farmers didn't want them, so the government felt sorry for them and bought them instead. Is that called a subsidy? JK - don't get all mental on me, lol.

Aw No!! Ya went and done it now!!! Come on G-man tell us how well deere done in the Gov. testing before WW-2 to see who won the contract. I heard that on a quiet night in a field on a military base you can still hear the testers laughing there a$$es off!! Could you just imagine trying to hide the sound from the enemy?? Or trying to run from them on a Deere. HaHa we would have lost the war for sure!!

Military vehicles were commonly built by manufacturers in WWII in joint ventures for other companies as regular production was shut down of farm machinery. The amphibious vehicles were a joint venture. Not sure, but I think MM and Firestone (maybe Goodyear?) worked on the Normandy anphibious vehicles. MM also created the first vehicle dubbed "Jeep" after a charactor in a Popeye cartoon. I belive the service guys did that. I rode in one years ago at the Prairie Gold Rush convention in Prairieville, MI. 4 whl drive! There were also sever other big vehicles that hauled equipment and artilery around. I thought they were all gone, but a few pop up now and then at MM shows. Caterpillar was a player and I think in the Korean war too. I know a few veterans that ran them. I am not sure about other tractor makers as I stay mostly MM. Any info out there?

I seen the 4x4 that MM built to go against the willys for ww-2. I am still not sure why they picked the willys over the MM, but I believe the willys was actually faster by about 15 mph.. All the companies done there part but most were building non tractor items. Case built 500 pound bombs, aftercoolers, and many other items, but they did win the contract for 15,000 tractors. There are many of them still floating around. I also have seen MM military tractors, but don't believe that any other tractor company made more then case.

Willys was a small rugged versatile machine. The MM "Jeep" was a big huge wide heavy thing for different stuff. Not sure exactly what the deal was. I am not sure if MM even had a spring suspension under it. I love to see those Willys machines on M*A*S*H. Hear those old rugged things howl as they drove around. I think the Willys had a F-head 72 h.p. (???) 4 cyl.

Cletrac supplied crawlers to the Navy and Airforce for moving planes around. The largest of these was the MG1 or M2. John Deere actually built some of these during WW2. I still maintain that this is what planted the seed at Deere that more than two cylinders was the way to go in the future. After all after driving around a rubber tracked crawler powered by a 427 cube six cylinder cranking 3000 rpm at 30 MPH had to be a blast.

Many years ago a friend of mine told the reason there were so few MM tractors around was not because of the tractors but because the other machinery they made wan't very good. He said the MM tractors were very good but the implements really sucked and in a lot of instances only the MM implements would fit the MM tractors. I assumed he was talking about front mount cultivators and mounted corn pickers. I don't know this for a fact just what he told me. Everything we had was either red or green.

Military versions of other tractors have also been built. Cletrac, Oliver, Massey Harris, Caterpillar, etc. Looks like there is room for more than one "best" by your definition. By the way its spelled ARMY. ;^)

Hey there A.P. How is the Std. 88 going? Did you get those big 18.4s on there this summer? Some folks could use some manners here on this site. CAT was a big Army contributor.

Hi Ethan, I did use the tires a few times this summer but didn't get out to pull all that much. I did so-so with the 88 standard this year, I did a lot better with my 18-27 Oliver/Hart Parr in the 4500 and 5500 antique classes. I hooked at three transfer sled pulls with it and came away with two firsts, a second and a third place. I will need a bigger trailer next year because the 18-27 earned a place on it.

How did you do this year? Did you have a chance to hood your GBD?

Take care,
A.P.

Some feel MM was an engine company that built tractors. Their motor designs certainly make sence. To bad they got mixed up and lost in a merger like most companys have. Eat or be eaten I guess. The military could see how tough their stuff was! HD800 is the standard by which all motors can be measured. Hey, be nice to the other fellas (Kubota and such) out there. Any pull that can bring in other lots of colors other than only JD, Allis, and IH, is fun to watch!
