Does anyone know how to tell the difference between a reg 60 block and a power block without tearing apart into the engine?

Thanks for the help... The tractor is not exactly stock. Its actually a 51' A with a 60 block in it. The side frames have been cut to fit it in. It has peacocks, but I cant tell if they have been added or not. So the only way to know if it is a power block is it says power block on top of the crancase? She seems to have plenty of power for any job. Thanks for the help again.

what you have in your late styled 'a' is not uncommon at all. when jd 60 production started, the '60' blocks became the 'factory replacement' block for all of late styled 'a' & '60' tractors. the '60' block has the same interinal dimensions as the 'a' block....the only outside changes was the addidion of the bulge above the sparkplug for more water area; better cooling. sorry to hear 'some butcher' cut the frame to install the block,he did'nt need to. the 3-4 h.p. increase of the '60' over late styled 'a' was NOT due to the block, but WAS due to duplex carb.

It should say 'Power Block 6"-3' between the 2 bolts on the top of the block that go into the crankcase. Sometimes people grind the lettering off though. If it has petcock holes in the bottom of the block up by the head, then it is not a power block, as power blocks did not come with petcocks.

You also have to remember that there are some pretty crafty pullers out there also that will plum the petcocks into the powerblocks also. So the petcocks are not always a dead give away about powerblocks.

I know, but assuming it wasnt a puller, I didn't want to confuse him by saying that. The power block in my dad and my's pulling tractor has them, but it is obvious that they were added, not original. I was trying not to confuse the man asking the question.
