push rod length

Just a question concerning the length of push rods when you shave your head 100 thousand. Do you have to shorten the push rod the same length as you shave off of the head, so that the valves will still be opening the same? Do you just place a shim under the rocker arm support? (so that the rocker arm assembly is still in the origional height/position) Don't want to insult anyone with my lack of knowledge, but was just wondering about it. Thanks

I have in the past, when the head and block had been changed enough that the valves could not be adjusted, cut spacers/ shims from ground stock of the desired thickness to place under the rocker arm assembly.

Like others have said.. You should be OK... You can also put a spacer under the rocker arm Assmebly depending on your tractor.. On a JD this will work.. but one some you have to notch the cup holder (the thing that the rocker is pushing on) to clear the rocker arm.. Or just shorten the push rod..
But with .100 you should be OK... Good Luck

Dave;

I shaved my head 1/4" last year and used the same push rods as before. They work just fine. If you adjust the valves the right way they will always open at the same time. If I am wrong, Please someone correct me.

Budd, I agree the stock pushrod length should be fine as long as you have enough adjustment. I think if I were to take a quarter inch of meat of my DC head I wouldn't be able to get any clearence between valves at all. Good thing all tractors are different and provide their own little challenges and obsticles. Makes life interesting!

Dave, I've had the same ? about this because i'm going to have my head reworked on my DC. The simplest way I can describe it would be to draw a side view of a valve spring, rocker, and pedistal. Then draw a side view of the same thing with a greater pedistal height. Notice the position of rocker, also the tip of the rocker on the valve. It apears to me you will lose some valve lift. I talked to the machine shop that is doing my head work and they said to bring in one of my pushrods with the head so they can measure it. Some pushrods can be shortened while others can't. There may be pushrods for other applications in the lenght you need. There's also a shop in the west that will make pushrods any lenght for I belive is 8.00 a rod. But then you might have enough adjustment on your rocker. Just my two cents worth. Dave S

Flyin, I forgot a couple of words that I should've put in but took for granted people knew what I was talking about. If your pushrod was to long to get correct adjustment and were to put a shim under rocker you would lose some lift. I guess I should proof read better. What RED model are you pulling? My daughter pulls a Farmall H in antique stock class.

You shouldn't lose any lift,as long as you have clearance between the rocker arm and the valve,it will go up and down the same amount.I pull a M,and a 44 Massey.

How do you lose lift without gringing off the lobe on the cam or using a rubber pushrod?

Not unless you forget to re-adjust your valves. Then it won't run right or maybe not at all.
