torque vs HP (again)?

All, I've tried getting simple answers on this and there seems to be a spitting contest as to who knows what and more. One quick and simple idea: a 5 to 1 geared reduction unit, on one side the shaft is spinning 5x as fast thus more hp, and oppositely the shaft is spinning 1/5 as fast but tons of torque, right? Kinda explains the transition of torque to Hp for me, or am I in the rhubarb department again. Thanks for being polite, Dennis.

The simplest explanation I can think of if is torque is a unit of force and Hp is a unit of power. For example : if you were deadhauling a load with a winch and the load is 1000 lbs and the radius of the winch drum is 10 inches. The amount of torque on the winch drum is 1000 lbs*10 inches which equals 10000 in-lbs. It does not matter how fast you are lifing the load the torque is still the same. The only difference is how fast you are lifting the load. The faster you lift the load the more horsepower you need. Place a gearbox between your winch with a reduction of 10:1 and the motor. The load on the output shaft of the gearbox is still 10000 in-lbs. However the torque on the motor is 10000 in-lbs./10=1000 inch-lbs. If your winch drum spins at 100 rpm the output of your motor must be 1000 rpms.

The relationship is Torque= hp*63025/rpms. or HP=rpms*Torque/63025

At the output of the gearbox HP=100rpms*10000 in-lbs/63025=15.87 hp

At the output of the motor HP=1000rpms*1000 ib-lbs/63025=15.87 hp. The same horsepower is required.

However if you change your gearbox to a 20:1 reduction the rate at which you are lifting your load is cut is half and your horsepower is cut in half.

The bottom line is torque is the amount of force required, horsepower is how fast you run that torque.

Dennis, the HP is proportional to Torque times RPM. So, it doesn't matter whether you have 10 Ft-lbs times 50 RPM or 50 Ft-lbs times 10 RPM, the answer is still 500. Hope this helps.

Excluiding slight losses from friction there will be the same HP on each shaft both input and output. Just that one shaft is spinning 5x slower but has 5x more torque.

Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems to me that horsepower and torque have been discussed every which way possible, with countless descriptions and examples given, in addition to links to sites that explain it much better than I can being posted. Like I've said time and again, it's simple math, and the variations of the formula, applied to your example, clearly bear that out. If you're irritated, I'm sorry, but I simply found it hard to believe that there was any doubt remaining. For all I knew, you could be just someone throwing more gas on a near-dead fire. I've had various reactions to what I posted - everything from "you're dead on" to "you're full of it and you don't know your head from your..." What bugged me the worst was the posts that seemed to suggest that I just made all this crap up. I hope you can understand my position on the matter, as I can understand yours.
