WHICH MAKES A BETTER PULLER JD 4010 OR 4020?

Looking to buy 4010/4020 diesel for Farm Stock Pulling. Wondering which is the preferred tractor and why. Is the 4010 lighter than the 4020? Will one with Powershift make a good puller? How light can you get these tractors with pressed wheels, narrow front, and 3 point and hydraulics removed? Anyone know where a good deal on one is?

When John Deere started the 4020 series they changed the replacement sleeves and pistons on the 4010 to the 4 1/4"bore,same as the 4020.You would have to look hard to find a 4010 with the original cubes,probably 99.9% are now 404 cubes.

4010 for least weight. Drop in a 50 or 55 series 466 with the better flowing head/manifold.

You will get more power out of a 4020 engine, unless you rebuild your 4010 with 4020 pistons and rings, and do some head work, or put a 4020 head on it. I would guess that you plan on doing some work on the injector pump, so the stock differences between the 4000 engine which was not meant for lugging under load, and the 4020 would be eliminated if it is done properly. If you do the work to any of the models, you should be able to get the same power out all of them. I htink the weight differences were told allready, but the 4010 is a lot eaier to get in a lower class than the 4000 and 4020, which will end up very close to eachother. Find a JD 4000, about 1200# lighter than a 4020 with the same engine

Really are not going to gain much if any. As the big weight difference between the 4000 and 4020 is do to mostly the rear wheel castings, three point arms and some sheet metal which they will not use any way. The final drives and axles are a little lighter but would be willing to bet that there would be less than 50# difference. The rest of the tractor is 4020 including the transmission and case. Same parts in the same parts book. DW

the 4020 has 500 lbs more weight in the front than a 4010, thats one reason they changed the model number in 1964

Don't doubt that at all, The comparison that I was making was a "4000" to a "4020". To compare a 4010 to a 4020 I realize they are two different tractors. DW

4010 is lighter. You should be able to get it in the 5500 or 6000 pound class no problem. The earliest 4010's are the lightest. I make several different parts to lighten (and strengthen) a 4010. Depending on your rules it might be cheaper to build a gas tractor. If you are looking at moving up, the 4020's do have a little more room in them for stronger gears.
